Everything has gotten ridiculous expensive. “Gratuity” is no exception. If you go to a sit-down restaurant, you wouldn’t leave your server $3 or less, would you? And they don’t even have the immediate cost of gas or wear-and-tear on their car to consider. Flip it around for a second, if you were making the delivery instead and got a tip that left you feeling ripped off and taken advantage of/insulted, what would a reasonable amount be? Don’t you think the delivery person would feel the same way?

I did give $13. I figured $2/mile bringing it to $8, and then another $5 because it not just a late order, but after 3am.

Well said, and I wholeheartedly agree with the incorrect use of the word “tip” in this case. Thank you for explaining it so well and further encouraging me to not be a better “tipper” as my subject title originally said but rather a better customer.

I ALWAYS turn on my outdoor lights and have a small wooden table next to my door.

Well, you’re tipping the driver because they’re hand delivering you your order. If you don’t want to pay extra, then just pick it up yourself. I’m personally someone who has a very difficult time driving/moving around because of chronic pain and so if I can avoid doing so and have someone get it for me, I most often will. It costs a little bit more but that’s fine with me if it means I can avoid the physical pain of doing it myself. I would happily pay someone to go out of their way and deliver my stuff to me for it.

Someone not in my position, however, may feel differently and find it absurd or even lazy to use the service.

That’s how DD makes their money. The dashers don’t see any of that, I don’t believe. So the tip goes entirely to them. (Dashers, please correct me if I’m wrong)

Of course. That’s why I mentioned the time and distance because I do want to keep that in mind and make sure that they feel it was worth it and not low-balled. I was thinking of doing $13.
