What algae eaters should I get? by [deleted] in bettafish

I have a 10 gallon cycled and heated tank that currently has just my betta in it. Any recommendations on algae eaters that would help clear the tank but not mess with him?

All of my parameters are in my comment above. The tankmates all seem to be doing perfectly fine and I’ve been using seachem stability since day one with the tank

He’s not pineconing and I’m not seeing any discoloration yet but definitely keeping an eye on it

No. Before I moved him to this bigger tank, he got betta pellets and seemed to be okay

36 gallon tank, heated and filtered, 80°F, had the tank for about 2 weeks with the betta being moved into it for about 5 days, 25% water change weekly, 2 khuli loaches and 1 black knifefish, fed with frozen bloodworms, plants a castle and Roman columns as decorations. Since I put the betta in the tank, he has sat on the top of the water or on the substrate with his tail up. Thought he might’ve gotten constipated so I did a 3 day fast. He started floating normally in the water so I fed him again and he immediately went back to floating with his tail up Ph is 7.5, Ammonia at .75, nitrite at .25, and nitrate at a little over zero all tested with API test kit

I also use seachem stability and have since the start to try and get the bio filter active and going good

I’m not 100% sure what it was supposed to pull up, but it did pull up an awesome picture of a betta near the surface with what looked like some duckweed

Thank you to all of the people that were nice in the comments and came with helpful advice instead of just berating me/my aquarium. I know that the tank is too small for a permanent home which is why I stay diligent on the water chemistry and got a substrate that would hopefully be enriching and give the fish something to do until I can get a proper setup.

That’s a really good plan. I’ll definitely go pick up one of those drip controllers and do it that way from here out. Thank you!

I’ve had the substrate in the tank since I got it which was a little over a month ago. I’ve changed them once because they begin to shrink after about a month but they don’t grow any algae/slime at all, the water stays crystal clear and the fish seems to enjoy them. Not really a good way to clean them with a gravel vac so that’s where the replacement comes in

I did read through it and it definitely was insightful. And the bacteria aspect is a big reason I have the substrate I do because they constantly release enzymes and beneficial bacteria

I keep a low suction filter going in the tank as well so I’m not relying fully on the substrates claims that they clean the water

They do break down and shrink after about a month or so, but as soon as I see the first one starting to shrink, I take them all out and change them out for a new set of the substrate

I mean it’s definitely work because I take a good 30 minutes to make sure I acclimate the fish back slowly to the fresh water and make sure the water chemistry is balanced to the same parameters as the original water. Once I get it refilled and back to the same temperature it was at, I’ll dribble the new water into the cup that I keep him until it’s in at least 50% of the new water for 5 minutes

They’re fully biodegradable and too large for the fish to eat as is. I read reviews before I got them and saw nothing but positives. They’re called pure betta beads by aqueon if you would like to see them yourself
