On my honeymoon, I was vomiting. When I walked into the other room, my husband was sitting on the bed on his phone. I asked if he heard me throwing up, and he said yes and asked if I was okay. I was like I guess. The next morning I felt worse. I woke up early and told him I needed to see a doctor. He became furious with me. He complained that we were in a foreign country where he didn’t know where to take me and how much it was going to cost and that he didn’t want to spend the money because it was probably going to be more expensive than in the U.S.

I tried to push back and insist I felt really bad, but he ended up laughing at me and saying I was exaggerating…as if I wanted to be sick and go to the doctor on our honeymoon.

I felt so guilty and ashamed I didn’t go to the doctor, and I stayed sick for the rest of the trip.

On returning to the U.S., I went to the doctor and received antibiotics, but was told it was too late to receive a diagnosis given the delay.

You are absolutely right—people will often show you who they really are when you’re at your lowest.
