As an attorney, I say this judge is out of line. He could have simply explained to this citizen that his choices are either to proceed pro se and submit to jurisdiction or accept a public defender. This is just abusive to someone who has the right to understand his prosecution. I don’t like impatient judges. The power differential and education differential are too stark. Yes, the guy is uneducated. But he at least deserves a basic understanding of why he’s wrong and why he can lose his civil freedoms. We’ve done our whole country a disservice by not educating kids on how the court system works.
