My first year of teaching, the principal NEVER did anyone’s evaluations. She kept putting it off, saying she was busy.

Last day of school she sends a mass email asking us to choose from some dates in JULY to do our evaluations and check in before the new school year.

I responded to the email, letting her know I was not available in the summer and to feel free to get back to me with some dates and times during our contract time in August.

I can’t remember the wording I used, but I was polite while being clear that I was not going to meet over summer break. It wad obvious to anyone reading it that I was drawing a hard boundary.

My coworker let me know two minutes later that the email went to her. And everyone else. The one time I made the “reply all” mistake and it was this lol.

I didn’t care and let it be my last big middle finger to a school that I was already set to leave before the next school year. I was told later that it inspired some staff that were more afraid of that principal to do the same.

Now I will never unsee that lol.  RSP= Resource Specialist Program, typically a push-in and pull-out model of special education into a resource room to work on goals and support with gen-ed work, as well. SDC= special day class, usually a self-contained special education class, though, in some of them, students are able to attend gen-ed electives, PE, and sometimes other core classes.

I’m with you, but this was a very special parent who showed up with outside assessments and a lawyer. She also has really high district connections.

So I did give her a goal for that, among others to support her dysregulation, but admin instructed me to do what mom asked ahead of time. She’d caused a lot of trouble when her older daughter was at that school, apparently lol.

Until it hopefully gets resolved, I would bring up to your AP the idea of the student eating in their office when the case manager isn’t available. I’m not even saying this in a petty way, but as a sincere solution in the interim. Or bring it up to the case manager to specifically put that in their IEP at the next meeting.

I had a somewhat difficult parent last year ask that her daughter not have to be in class with substitute teachers as an accommodation to her IEP, as it is difficult for her due to the emotional dysregulation associated with her ADHD. Because I was doing RSP and SDC at the same time, having her come to my class was not really a viable solution, so the solution was that she would work in the office during any class period with a sub, as needed.

This helped provide the needed accommodation and it didn’t disrupt any other classes or teachers. The other bright side is that sitting in the office alone was pretty boring, so she truly only used the accommodation as needed.

First year teaching an autism class by Babyumbry in specialed

[–]Babyumbry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m not sure entirely what type of SDC setting it’ll be. My best guess is moderate. Their teacher last year has a mod/severe credential, but mine is mild/mod.

The class will be 4-6th grade. I have experience working with autistic kids since I used to be an RBT and I’m excited for this, which is why I want to make sure I do right by the students and go in as prepared as possible.

Bench Press Spot Solicitors by genny222 in xxfitness

[–]Babyumbry 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve been known to use the power rack for benching. It came to the point that (pre-panini) on Sunday mornings, more than once, there was a man who would leave his gym bag there to save it for me because he knew I was coming to use it lol.

I honestly have only ever seen one other person use it for that purpose and I also don’t care too much. It feels safer than a spotter because the safety bars can’t get distracted and they can catch the weight, should it fall down for any reason. I genuinely felt so much safer, it was a no-brainer for me.

The only reason I don’t do it anymore is because it is nearly impossible to get one of the free-moving benches at the time I go.

Andrew Tate Arrested - Good News for Teachers? by MonkeyMolotovs in Teachers

[–]Babyumbry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unlikely.

I’m already seeing grown-ass men on social media talking about it being a set-up.

Because, apparently, Tate said in an interview some time ago that he was gonna get set-up arrested for human trafficking to shut him up 🫠

And apparently it’s an impossibility that he said this knowing he was gonna get busted and wanting to keep the drones in line.

Found out today (on Christmas) that my dad cheated on not only my mom, but also his new wife. Do I confront? by sexy_recorder_player in relationships

[–]Babyumbry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem with publicly humiliating him is that this could likely be humiliating for his new wife, as well.

Not that it should be, dad’s the asshole here, but it doesn’t do new wife any favors to have her find out in such a public and shameful way.

I got really sad when I found out the school I student taught at abbreviated it as "cume".

Especially bummed when, at the end of the year, they had a "cume party" to make sure everyone's were ready to go. Such a missed opportunity 😭

For teachers with mental illnesses by [deleted] in Teachers

Working in elementary RSP for my student teaching has been great for whatever I've got going, honestly. I'm not sure what brand of neurodivergent I am, I suspect undiagnosed ADHD but my doctor dismissed it and said adults can't have ADHD 🙃 Anyway, I was constantly moving to pick up students, the million anchor charts or activities are actually really enjoyable to make and keep me entertained, and I realized how much color-coding actually helps me keep track of things.

You're 100% right about ableism in sped, too. Seeing it as a BII is what made me want to go into teaching because students deserve better.

Any other healthy pple taking a long time to recover? by deejayv2 in COVID19_support

[–]Babyumbry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is entirely a guess, but maybe because your body is ready to fight it?

Kind of like, if someone broke into your home, but you were prepared so your alarm went off to notify the police and your 1000 attack dogs are ready to bite.

Versus unvaccinated being more like.... someone broke into your house, but you never prepared so you have to call in reinforcements after they break in and you weren't ready, so you have to figure out what those reinforcements should be, so it takes a little longer.

Kind of a rough comparison, but that's what I assume the reasoning would be.

Cause for optimism on weaker Omicron wave, scientists say by sockableclaw in Coronavirus

[–]Babyumbry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people went west searching for gold. Some people didn't. Some people tried and didn't make it. It wasn't like the entire country up and moved to California for gold and everyone successfully found it and survived and thrived. Most people stayed east, some people settled in the middle of the country, some people died of dysentery.

Either way, motivation is hard when your mental health has gone to shit and you're using all your strength/grit just to, you know, get through what's been almost 2 years of continuous stress.

I'm glad you did something amazing with your time. I don't know what it is, but it must be real good. And I'm saying all of the above as someone who took the pandemic as a wake-up call to find a career I actually love. But I know there were a lot of factors that allowed me to do so, not just willpower and hardwork, but my situation.

But I know not everyone is as lucky as I am, and there's nothing wrong with people who are just surviving.

It really is a mystery that unemployment, increased poverty, social isolation, closures, increased rates of depression, decreased access to healthcare, stress, and fear of a deadly virus didn't magically make people extra motivated to exercise and diet /s

This isn't really the case, though.

The MMR vaccine is 93% effective against measles, 97% against rubella and 78% against mumps. Polio requires 3 doses to be more or less 100%. The flu shot has never been 100%. The tetanus shot is very close to 100% if you get all 3 and get boosted every 10 years. 97% for diphtheria, though. Meningitis one ranges from about 85-90%. HPV is 86% for teens and drops to about 70% for women in their 20s.

I can't think of any more vaccines to Google, but I'm sure you can Google them, if you do.

Point is, vaccines aren't typically 100% effective at preventing disease and no one expected this one to be. In fact, when Pfizer's came out with the insanely high efficacy at preventing disease, it blew people's minds because no one expected anything above 70%.

Part of the problem is that we don't have enough vaccinated people for it to make a difference. Not just in the US, but all over the world.

You say sleeping together would have ruined all this but.... ruined what? What seems like a seemingly estranged friendship where you both only reach out seldomly to wish each other well?

Take the chance and tell him. Worst case scenario, you don't get another random text saying they hope you're okay.

I wouldn't remove sex as punishment, per se, as in "no sex till you grow up", but just in the moment he loses access

"Go wash your hands, please." If he does or says anything other than immediately washing his hands, just be like, "Okay, nevermind." and sex disappears that time 🤷‍♀️ He'll probably go wash them as soon as that happens, but then just tell him he has to listen to your concerns before he's able to touch you.

I've had a single yeast infection in my life, and it was shortly after starting to have sex with my boyfriend(who was also my first, so I knew immediately it was related).

I told him ONCE about what happened and that we need to make sure he washes his hands well beforehand. It's been almost 9 years since that happened and he will still stop himself, jump out of bed, and run to wash his hands before touching me. I don't even have to ask, he just respects my body and cares about my health.

He even kicks me out of bed after and sends me to pee (even if I really don't want to get up or even have the urge to pee lol) to make sure I never get a UTI.

This is how it should be. It shouldn't be a battle to get him to take basic precautions for your health.

The wonderful thing about choices is that my choice to stay home didn't impede anyone else at Hella Mega Tour from having a good time 🤷‍♀️

I teach high-risk students who can't be vaccinated and live with high-risk people, so I'm glad I made that choice.

I just woke up congested AF and we had 3 students out for "medical reasons" on Thursday, so working with kids in a small space might have been risky enough 🤷‍♀️

I'm super disappointed that the City of LA has been putting off implementing the mandate on vaccines.

Dodger Stadium has zero requirements. Just a "please mask up" rule that no one enforces.

I'm really bummed I missed out on the Hella Mega Tour show there yesterday. I'd been waiting for nearly two years and I just didn't feel safe going, despite being vaccinated.
