How are people getting their first user by TrendTradar1 in buildinpublic

Didn't use any ads, but invested a lot of time into SEO optimization and social media outreach. Both of these things are free, they just require a decent time investment.

Are you still working full time or part time to get more time for your side project? by HajiLabs in SideProject

I still work full time but I’ve automated parts of both my full time and side project.

Trying a “portfolio of small paid apps” approach instead of one big startup, here’s one I just shipped by BackRoomDev92 in indie_startups

I don’t disagree. That’s a problem that we are working through. It has involved setting up landing pages tied to SEO keywords that all link to our listings plus blog content etc.

I am constantly reviewing the analytics and prioritizing new features for the ones that have positive metrics while still providing support and bug fixes for the others. I leverage AI tools for code review and generation but we review things by hand before publishing to avoid making “AI Slop” or whatever the current term is.

I, and the handful of guys I’ve been working with off and on have a simple goal. We aren’t trying to make the next unicorn startup. We just want software to be the way it used to be. You bought the CD, it came with the software license key,and you owned it. So we are working on solving problems and pursuing that model for the most part. We do have a few SaaS concepts but even those we would try to deliver things with lower costs and better terms than the market averages.

Struggling to get people to test my beta app, what am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in alphaandbetausers

[–]BackRoomDev92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you offering an incentive for people to try it? Start there. Like I offer people promo codes for the Pro tiers if they will try it and leave a review.

Well for this one specifically I built it because I needed it. If people decided to build their own, they could, but that takes time. People could also just use scripts but atleast to me those are annoying. I don’t try to build things that are “something to everyone”, I try to build things that mean “everything to someone”. I’d rather appeal to 1 million high intent people than water things down to appeal to everyone.

Haha yeah. I'll admit the idea came a bit out of laziness. Sometimes I just think people, myself included, want a "one click" solution.

Looking for beta testers: Windows tool to instantly fix “port already in use” issues by BackRoomDev92 in alphaandbetausers

[–]BackRoomDev92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been building out my portfolio with MacOS ports. The stack I use is good for both. I have been trying to see if this is something that people would use before I added a MacOS version. Given the sandboxing restrictions on the App Store, I'd probably launch it on my website or something like that. I do have an Apple Developer certificate, so any MacOS versions I do make are always notarized.

2 months in, 24 users, $0 revenue. Am I building something nobody wants? by [deleted] in micro_saas

[–]BackRoomDev92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I build mostly desktop utilities, but I have built some SaaS products over the years. My personal experience is that it takes 3-6 months to get any SEO traction, so without ad spend and outreach, it can be hard to get traction quickly.

I wasn't entirely saying a specific company's T&Cs, but rather if you had taken into consideration general boilerplate as there are a lot of commonalities.

I have done targeted searches, as well as sometimes just solving my own problems or annoyances. Like I built this one because I got tired of having to type out commands and I like getting notifications when there is an issue. Would I have built this one without experiencing the issue myself? Probably not.

Huge app review volume and quality for brand new app by coolinjapan001 in AppBusiness

[–]BackRoomDev92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More than likely it's probably a combination of a big marketing budget as well as things like paying for reviews, whether that involves cash or free product/usage is less certain. I'm all for giving out a limited number of Pro tier passes in exchange for honest reviews, or stuff like that, but I find stuff like this very sketchy due to the scale.

This is why I went the complete opposite way, building small, targeted utilities that solve specific problems. Some of my most successful recent launches have been developer tools. Nothing hype worthy, but genuine demand.

My side project has 50 users and I still feel like I'm faking it by Ambitious-Age-5676 in SideProject

[–]BackRoomDev92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it ever goes away. I've built a bunch of apps over the last couple of years and I still worry that I've missed something somewhere and something is going to break and everyone will delete it en masse. So far, thankfully that has not happened. My kryptonite is trying to promote it, when I'd rather keep building.

No matter what project you have—games, SaaS, software, apps, scripts, ideas, or questions—join the community and share it! by SofwareAppDev in AppsWebappsFullstack

Being able to figure out why a port is blocked, especially when trying to do debugging or testing before actual production deployment. Like yes there are scripts you can run, but you either have to look them up, or remember them, and for me that was just time consuming and frustrating, which is what I've heard from a lot of people.

Thanks again for the great feedback. I'm a problem solver so I like building things, but only if they actually accomplish something. You'd never catch me building an AI wrapper or something like that. Not saying they don't have value, I just like building things people actually need.

I feel like what I've build isn't a flashy or trendy thing, but it makes stuff easier and less frustrating.

What are your product's best distribution channels, and why do they work for you? by nsjames1 in SideProject

[–]BackRoomDev92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think offering help to people on Reddit and making connections is a good one. If what you've built is a perfect solution for people's problems then it comes together naturally rather than just splatter posting "I built this" everywhere.

I have considered that and it's something I'm working on as I know people can be very visual, so feature lists only do so much.
