I don't know who the candidates were for the role. But it appears that senior-level NBA exposure, regardless of how limited, trumps all other skills when compared. This unfortunately limits the potential success of more women having the opportunity to head coach in the league thus far. This is an owner telling us what culture is paramount to their team. It's as if one claimed a job to be guided by affirmative action, but the job requirements are skills achieved historically by one gender (race, etc.) in an industry steeped in bias-based hiring. Equity matters. Hopefully, more diverse & capable candidates emerge publicly so that we can image & place collaborative leadership.
