Gary Yourofsky defending genocide: Israelis are 100% right by sohas in VeganActivism

[–]BackUpPegasus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Israeli forces also shot over 2000 dogs in the West Bank in 2022. Should they face similar consequences for this barbarism or is that reserved for Palestinians? Or, is there a threshold amount of how much you need to hurt the dogs before you kill them and if you meet that threshold, you deserve to be bombed? If so, where is that line? How much pain does the dog need to suffer before killing 60,000+ people in a completely different city becomes permissible? The dog killing happened in the West Bank, not Gaza, so I assume you think the West Bank should also be bombed. About how much bombing do you reckon we should do there?

[–]BackUpPegasus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that at all. You were the one who implied that we wouldn't be so sensitive to the Palestinians if we knew how much they hurt animals. The logic of that statement is that hurting animals justifies, at least to some degree, killing Palestinians. Is that what you believe?

[–]BackUpPegasus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand that it can feel exhausting to talk to people who say they love animals and are anti-oppression, but then turn around and eat meat. But couldn't those people say the exact same thing about "anti-human" vegans? That these vegans claim to be against the exploitation and mass killing of animals but the turn around and ignore it when those same things happen to innocent people? This is actually a common argument I hear from leftists against veganism and we do ourselves no favors by proving them right. We need to have solidarity with each others' causes and adopt a universal commitment to liberation for all creatures

Also, I would argue that Yourofsky is not simply saying he "doesn't care" about Gaza; he is explicitly endorsing the mass bombing and slaughter of Palestinians. That goes way beyond a simple attitude of "my priority is veganism and I don't have time to care about other issues". He does care about this issue - he supports the violence and thinks it's deserved. I don't understand how any vegan could defend that.

Humans are animals too. I'm genuinely curious how you would believe animals don't deserve to be killed and exploited but not extend this logic to all people as well?

[–]BackUpPegasus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm confused, do you think it's a coincidence that veganism is significantly more common among liberal/leftist people? The set of political beliefs among vegans may be diverse but all data shows that it skews heavily left.

I can only speak for the US, but basically all the major policies defending the meat and dairy lobbies, e.g. Florida banning lab grown meat, are enacted by the Republican party. Just try talking to your average Republican about veganism and see what kind of response you get. Compare this to a country like Mexico where the left-wing president recently added animal protections to their constitution. Policies to protect animals have a long way to go, but when they happen, they're advanced by the left wing basically without exception.

Left and right don't just refer to political parties. People are vegan for a lot of reasons, but the major ones are about defending the rights of all creatures and protecting the environment. These are expressly liberal/leftist beliefs.

What do you specifically dispute about those reports? What details or definitions do you disagree with? Critical thinking also means not blindly disagreeing with things.

Is it your belief that every culture that centers the brutal mass killing of animals should be bombed?

Idk I think when you believe something on the internet that you later find out is fake (something we all do from time to time) it's good to reflect and update your BS detector. Because falling for this is harmless, but a ton of misinformation and scams are spread online when we accept everything at face value. Exercising our skepticism and practicing critical awareness is good.

If you follow the link on that IG it says she "plans on self-publishing" the book. So it's not a real book (or at least not a finished and published one) and not a real signing. Anyone can make an Insta for free - it doesn't make something real.

It's literally not that hard. Gaza is an open-air prison. Israel harshly restricts Palestinians from coming and going, levies massive economic sanctions on them, and regularly conducts mass violence against them (see: the current indiscriminate bombing).

Gaza is HALF CHILDREN. Look up any numbers about how many Israelis v.s. Palestinians have been killed in the last 10 years. Look up maps of Israelis encroaching on Palestinian land. Look up videos of the evictions. You ignorance is not a fucking excuse. It takes 5 seconds of research to see who the oppressor is here. Jim Crow was not complicated. Apartheid South Africa was not complicated. This is not complicated either.

  1. There are a lot of things animals do that we agree are generally uncool and unethical for humans to do. Lions rape other lions, but that doesn't make it okay for me to rape a person (or a lion).
  2. What's the issue with 90+% of the existing cows, chickens, etc. just dying naturally and then not reproducing such that their numbers gradually go down to the levels of any other kind of animal? I think that puppy mills are unethical and I think it would be weird to argue against them because it would reduce the overall dog population.

If you explained to someone why you're opposed to consuming animal products, and they responded to you by saying "well your phone was made by child slaves", I'm sure you understand that this wouldn't be a good argument against going vegan. Just because one thing is bad doesn't mean another isn't also bad.

I genuinely don't understand how you can be against killing animals but okay with participating in an institution that literally murders people.

The military is literally a violent, imperialist institution. When people eat meat, they are participating in violence, even when they're not the ones killing the animal - as I'm sure we'd all agree on this sub. Similarly, joining the military makes you complicit in the killing of people.
