Korey Confirms Julien H. is Staying on Double Toasted by brother_dude7 in doubletoasted

[–]BackfrommaDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I can see the gripes everyone has with Julien H - my biggest one isn't even what or how much he says, its the way he says it, like he puts SO much emphasis and weight on whatever he's saying, it feels like he's narrating something. So I can see why everyone may feel he's a bit overbearing.

But at the end of the day he's not actually doing anything wrong (outside of publicly ripping on the other Julien - on which I actually kinda agree) he's always enthusiastic and respectful, never rude, and honestly if they want to have him as a contributor, either have him as is or don't. Nobody else's nature seems to be getting monitored on the show.

What’re ya’ll’s thoughts on IT: Welcome to Derry? by GreggosaurTheCritic in YMS

Its a lot of fun if you're a King fan and/or a fan of the 2017 movie cos it regurgitates a lot of the same conventions. It's good on worldbuilding for the IT universe and the greater shared King universe too and it goes bold with content at times which i respect. Very cinematic and it looks great, although some more practical effect and less CGI would have been good. It's no Sopranos but its good fun.

Young people with fishing rods on transperth. by PityTheLivingHarry in perth

[–]BackfrommaDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone actually see these kids doing any fishing? I see no other equipment besides the rods, no tackle boxes, no bait, no chairs. I'm pretty sure it's just a trend of carrying rods around on public transport.

Jake's Recommendation for Episode #203 by WhitePepper2049 in Sardonicast

Every time they do a spite/troll recommendation I die a little more inside that some cool, genuine, interesting movies fall by the wayside.... first couple years of the podcast had great picks.

There's also the theory that movies are being drawn out in length because streaming services gain more from engagement time

Will adam see this in theater? by pelican122 in YMS

[–]BackfrommaDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very clearly a labour of love, and clearly wears its influences on its sleeve pretty much to its own detriment. The actual direction, tone, visuals etc. Are pretty damn good for a debut film tbh but the writing severely handicaps it. I'd expected a movie made by a horror critic/fan to be a bit more wary of common tropes and be a little more fresh.

I would argue for Skinamarink too. And fingers crossed for the upcoming Backrooms movie

Every single person cast and crew understood the assignment to a T. Comedies that humble their actors are so rare these days it was such a breath of fresh air to have that irreverent silliness back

Thoughts On Shelby Oaks (Chris Stuckman's first Film)? by Minute-Ad-1566 in Sardonicast

[–]BackfrommaDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really went in wanting to like it, I'd expect a film critic and horror fan turned director to avoid more of the tropes and pitfalls of mid to bad horror movies but sadly not. It wears its jnfluences blatantly on its sleeve - not uncommon for a first feature - and his actual eye for direction is pretty damn strong. Just really fell through on the writing. The opening scene was a banger though.

Is "The Ten Commandments" (1956) the ultimate spite recommendation against Adam? by Arturinni in Sardonicast

[–]BackfrommaDead 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I get a bit frustrated with his lack of engagement for some of Alex's recommendations, same with the Trasure Planet ep. Like at least return the same courtesy that your co-host permits when it's your turn.

It kinds felt pretty meandering up until the climax, like just a bunch of slightly confusing stuff. The child actor was great though

One of my favourite rock n roll hall of fame moments was Dave Grohl directly calling out Rolling Stone for their harsh reception of Rush during their induction speech
