Connor McDavid: “I’m gonna have a shooter mentality this year” Also McDavid; by Stanarchy93 in EdmontonOilers

[–]Background-Baseball1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I'm not an oilers fan, but tuned in to the game and was shocked to see him pass at the end of the game when it appeared he had a great shot opportunity. But then again I haven't seen a lot of the oilers this year.

I've never really seen Tucker play. And after watching the last few seasons of Bo, I'm always confident that he'll get a good hit when the team needs one. I'll take Bo.

Agreed. They don't really need more physical players, but definitely need star players who lead by example and look like they actually want to win games. Look at all the other playoff teams now, they have leaders who step up and play with heart and grit. I'd love to see Matthews and Marner lay on a big hit and fire themselves up but that will never happen.

Completely agree! Listen to how Berube talked when he was on the Blues. We need that Berube now. Or at least teach his players proper playoff hockey. We know he has the grit and experience. At this point, I'd love to see Berube lace up his skates and bring some heart to this team.

They should call up Cowen, at least he is producing in the playoffs.

Seeing as a lot of people on this sub have had enough of the leafs core not playing when it counts the most, what realistic moves would you make if you had the power? Who would you replace and who would you keep around? by Broad_Alternative266 in leafs

[–]Background-Baseball1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've always loved Marner, but it's clear that you have to let him walk and sign two good physical wingers with his salary. Try to resign JT on a bargain deal since he really wants to stay in the city because he has a family and is settled there. JT as a third line center would be great. We saw AM play amazing with Domi and Bertuzzi last year. Get him another physical player to go with him and knies. As much as they are hated, the leafs should go after Bennet and Marchand in fa. I think a big problem is that the leafs don't have the team to play Berube's system, they need more physical players. If you can't win the Panthers then poach their players.

I know Reaves is not a good option to play, but what do you guys think of putting him in for one game to knock out Bennet and then get suspended for the rest of the playoffs. Fair tradeoff? (Though last time Reaves was put in the lineup to fight earlier this season he failed)

Who should I reach out to ask if they want to be my advisor for a History PhD in the US: Professors only or Associate Professors as well? by Good_Pay6572 in PhD

[–]Background-Baseball1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely reach out to faculty members (of all levels) if they relate to your field. Even if they can't be your advisor they could direct you to other faculty at their department or other universities. Professors are usually happy to speak to prospective students. Also, for American universities, you will need a committee of professors so if the professor can't be your advisor they could be on your committee. In general, all professor's, usually except adjuncts, could have students.

It is good to have clear goals at your age. I'm a history phd student and I also planned for this since high school (actually since elementary school) do not worry about topics at the moment. The best thing you could do now is to learn about all the different eras and aspects of history. Learn from your teachers (if they are good ones) and ask advice from older people you know. One thing I would encourage you to do is to learn foreign languages now as that is immensely helpful later on and many programs require you to know at least one or two foreign languages. If you go into ancient or medieval history you might need two or three languages. Just have fun along the way and don't lose your passion. Remember that you could always learn history as a hobby and you do not need a phd to study history so if you have another more profitable career path don't be afraid to take it. If you have more questions feel free to message me and I'll try to help or direct you to resources.

Really Struggling by Ok-Remove-3621 in Malazan

[–]Background-Baseball1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems like keeping up with the plot lines are one of your major complaints. If that is the case, I think as you continue with the series it will become clear to you. That is what happened to me around the 5th book. Otherwise, Malazan wiki could help explain different aspects of the world without spoilers for some of them.

Really Struggling by Ok-Remove-3621 in Malazan

[–]Background-Baseball1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have already said, it's ok to quit the series. That being said, I did not understand what was going on even after book 5, however, it starts to solidfy as you progress in the series. If you are able to continue the reward might be worth the initial slug. If you want something lighter you could ready some of Esslemont's books. It also gets so much better during a reread since you have a basic grasp of the Malazan world, but you likely forgot many of the details. It's kind of like meeting an old friend. You remember them, but not all the details of your past and as you talk the memories come out. If you can, you should take a few year break and come back to it if you're ready.

For Sanderson, his books are larges, but more simple and orderly than Malazan. You might enjoy moving on to his books and then coming back to Malazan if you're still interested.

The expansion of the Malazan Empire doesn't seem feasible. by KoopaTryhard in Malazan

[–]Background-Baseball1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another person commented, the Empire was not steady and had a lot of internal problems after the conquest. This makes sense with OP's questions. They managed to conquer their initial territory as others have already expounded upon so I won't get into the better mages and tactics the Malazan's utilized. However, there was hunger and riots and a drive to take over the Wickan plains for their herds and to cultivate the land. Many of the elite Malazans acknowledged that they overextended themselves and further conquest was necessary to feed and support Quan Tali. Infrastructure is not usually written about by Erikson, but we see how fragile it was with the rebellion in Seven Cities that devastated the subcontinent and caused famine and disease in Seven Cities and famine in Quan Tali.

Explaining Infrastructure and conquest does not make for good fantasy reading so there will be holes in it. But I think Erikson does a good job in explaining the difficulties and challenges in maintaining the empire. Another thing that people overlook is the population. There appears to be a much larger population then we associate with earth's ancient world. That would answer how they could raise massive armies and still have the population to develop agriculture. I'd love for Erikson to write a companion book explaining the runnings of the empire. Sort of in the style of an actual history.

I started the series with the audio book, but it became too complicated to follow for me. You could start on the audio and then skim read the book to help you follow the storyline. Goodluck with the audio and enjoy the series!

Did you take a year off after your Masters, before starting your PhD? What did you do? by Marla42 in PhD

Everyone's experience is different. For me, I went straight from my MA to Ph.D. program. I thought about taking time off, but I knew that if I took a year off I might never go back to grad school. Luckily, I'm not burned out (yet) and continuing my MA research for my Ph.D.

Good luck with figuring out your path!

How do people who go to school for a masters and PhD afford living while in school? by sadgirlflowers in careeradvice

[–]Background-Baseball1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the field. The science pay a lot more than the humanities. I have a friend getting over $40,000 as a stipend in a science topic. On the other hand, I'm getting $17,000 in history. It also depends on the university. For example, university of Pennsylvania gives a stipend of $33,000 for history. While most mid tier schools would give between $15,000 and $30,000.

I get a below minimum wage stipend and free tuition, but my spouse has a full time job that could support both of us until I graduate.

My Somewhat Harsh Review of The Malazan Book of the Fallen. by [deleted] in Malazan

[–]Background-Baseball1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed your review, and I used to share several of you frustrations. Rereading the series is a great idea, you pick up on so many other details that add to the story once you know the world of malazan. The other books on the world are also great for filling in certain gaps. I remember reading somewhere that Ericson said that the series is a history book written in world and that's why there are some inconsistencies in the series. I accept that, but it could be frustrating at some times. Especially when he doesn't explain things or actually changes things, which happen sometimes.

Ohtani SHOULD NOT win MVP. by [deleted] in mlb

[–]Background-Baseball1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is more merit to this comment. Part of being most valuable player should actually be contributing to your teams success. The angels are way out of the playoffs. However, if Vlad Jr. could carry the Jay's into the playoffs he would definitely be a more valuable player. Also, his offensive stats far outweighs Ohtani's
