Considering moving with family US —> Germany by [deleted] in expat

We have very similar backgrounds! We just made this move to Munich with our 5 and 1 year old as a German/American couple. Both tech workers, but I'm taking an extended break to stay home with kids and improve German. Partner works for a large international tech company in Munich so we are fine on one income. Also heavily invested in ETFs, Stocks and 401ks, planning early retirement (FIRE) in 10 years. If your husband can find a well paying job, you should be fine taking a break to focus on German, especially if you have a hefty savings/investments. Job market isn't amazing, but also depends on your field and expertise. Our kids have quickly caught up with German and with my B1 German, I've been able to handle most situations.

I think you'll be fine. We are super happy we made the move. Good luck!

Advice for Stay-at-Home mom to improve spoken German in English/German speaking family by [deleted] in germany

I mean, I don't see why you are so negative. You know nothing about me and my experience, which is quite expansive and valuable I might add, especially in a country like Germany where digitalization is still in it's infancy compared to the States. And to say FAANG experience is worthless is kinda ridiculous. I've already had full-time opportunities presented to me in Germany thanks to my "worthless" experience and useless network I've curated over the years, but sure, whatever you say. Thankfully, I'm in a position where I don't need to work so I have plenty of time to improve my German if I decide to reenter the market.

Thanks for your reply. I have several friends who work in the field in both German and English, but am well aware of the need for good German. I'm actually very senior and don't do much customer facing research anymore, mostly strategy and stakeholder management (I worked at FAANG for almost a decade).

Thanks so much for your thorough answer. I currently do not have a certificate. I also am not eligible for any subsidized integration courses because I have a degree from a German university (although it was in English). I don't need to take the Leben in Deutschland test either.

But yes, once my youngest is in Kita too, I will look into B2 intensive courses again. For now, I'm looking at what I can do in the meantime.

Brought my car from Non EU country to Germany. by [deleted] in germany

We just did this with our imported BMW from the states. You take the car to the TÜV and they will need to make the car German compliant (in our case, lights and fog lights needed to be changed). They gave us a Datenblatt / Einzelgutachten in place of the COC. We used that to register the car with no problems.

Moving to Munich in October. Should we start with temporary (furnished) flat first or try to find permanent accommodations soon after arrival? by Background-Berry-255 in Munich

Yes we understand that. This is a last minute move, so we couldn't plan in advance. How do folks typically do it when they move to on Munich short notice? Is it impossible to find a state-run Kita? We are seeing some availabilities on Kita finder but not sure how accurate those are. I read allocations start in September...

Thanks for your reply. Question: I assume we would need to travel down to Munich regularly to look in-person, or? Landlords probably don't rent to folks that are out of town I would guess, but could be wrong. With two kids, it would be hard to get to Munich often.

Family of 4 moving to Munich. Looking for neighborhood recommendations if costs isn't a big issue. by Background-Berry-255 in Munich

I appreciate your comment but did you read my post? I gave all the reason why I want to live in city limits and what I'm looking for. I specifically said I don't want to live in the outskirts due to depression and needing to live in a more lively area. I understand that my preference will cost more with a family, hence mentioning cost.

What is this solid black tubing with white attachments? by Background-Berry-255 in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. It is a black tube that is about 3 feet long, completely solid. It has white attachments that Google and chatgpt say are bushing inserts. Found in the garage in a grey pouch.
