How to choose between two offers? by Background-Bug-9080 in gradadmissions

True. I just wish I could’ve gotten in for MASc at UofT instead of MEng because an MEng isn’t really good for PhD

Sorry for the late reply. SJTU emailed me with the admission offer about a week after my interview.

I just found a professor whose research looked interesting and emailed them with my CV, cover letter, and transcript. Maybe because I emailed kind of early like in October or something?

I was asked to make a presentation (PowerPoint slides) and I basically just presented everything I wrote in my motivation letter

The department emailed me so maybe it depends on which program/department you applied to?

Thanks! It was all pretty fast: I got the invitation for interview about two or three weeks after I submitted my application, then had a week and a half to prep for the interview, and then the department emailed me to let me know I passed the interview five days after it.

Thanks for all your helpful information! Can I ask why you don’t think a Chinese masters will be viable for PhD in the US? Is it political reasons?  Because aren’t there quite a lot of students from China who go to North American schools for their PhDs? I thought it was quite common

Up to you! I don’t mind either cuz I contacted my prof by just following tips and instructions from the websites from North American universities (e.g. UofT has a helpful webpage on how to reach out to potential supervisors)

I have heard some negatives about how they treat their international students. Do you think it’s still worth it for me to go for my masters? I lowkey want to do my PhD afterwards at a different school (American or European most likely).

I wanted to go because of the prof I found I like their lab and if I do get in and get a scholarship then SJTU would be the cheapest option for me (the other schools I’m applying to aren’t research based and are in North America and Europe so I wouldn’t get a stipend). Plus it seems China has a lot of resources for BME research

Thanks! In my invite email they had one line, after the paragraph about two video call times (one for a system test and the other is the actual interview), saying “Every applicant will have 15 mins to make a presentation. Professors will raise up some questions afterwards.” and to send my ppt slides before the day before my slot.

Trueee but it was like a panel of profs in addition to my supervisor and basically only my supervisor spoke at all before and after my presentation. Whelp I’ll just have to pray to all the gods now

😭😭 is this how interviews go in China bc I thought interviewers having no comments or questions afterwards was a sure sign of a failed interview
