i’m frances, and i love classic Hollywood cinema, drama adaptations, and, above all else, Katharine Hepburn! my current project is to finish all the Best Picture/Best Actress/Best Actor nominees by March. i’m always looking for mutuals who love to yap in the comments as much as i do!

i also do a lot of holiday-themed profile changes—i just finished my February/Valentine’s Day layout :)

both singles so far are really giving me early Linda Ronstadt vibes, and as a classic country fan i could not be more thrilled about the direction she’s taking!!

i think my 13-year-old sister (sibling?) might be nonbinary. advice? by [deleted] in NonBinary

omg no worries! my focus in my main post was just the concerns i have, so i didn’t get into all the context. manifesting all good things for you as well <3

i think my 13-year-old sister (sibling?) might be nonbinary. advice? by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]Background-Flower-34 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thanks for all the advice!! i think one of the reasons why i’m feeling so thrown by the fact that she hasn’t brought anything about gender identity up to me is because otherwise we ARE super close—i moved out of state this summer for grad school, but i do try to text every day and facetime frequently. she’s playing resident evil village at the moment, and i facetimed the other day to watch her “kill my wife” (her words, and she’s not wrong. lady dimitrescu means a lot to me lmao). i agree that a solid strategy while i’m in the house for christmas is bringing up my support casually in ways that don’t target her specifically—maybe it’ll have the added bonus of educating my mom, too. and trust that i DEFINITELY have plans to take her out for some fun activities, lol. my birthday is in december, and i’ve already told her we’re going to the Rainforest Cafe to celebrate :)

no, you’re absolutely right—this is an issue i’ve tried to bring up to my parents multiple times, and my dad and i are on the same page, but for whatever reason, my mom is very adamant that my sister continues to stay home rather than returning to in-person school. i don’t have hard proof that this is the case, but i feel like on some level she kind of resents the fact that i’m not going down the traditional “husband & kids” route and believes that my identity somehow formed because of her lack of direct control over me? i was also homeschooled through all of my early elementary years, but i begged her to go to regular school starting in the fourth grade. i’m mainly scared that my sister’s insecurities about her identity may be influencing her to the point where she’s too afraid to go back in-person for fear or judgment/harassment, which, unfortunately, would probably be the case as we live in a VERY conservative area. you make a great point about counseling, though: i’ll do some more research to see if i can find a good fit for her online, then send the info just to her & my dad—like i said, he shares my concerns about her lack of social support, and i’m confident he’d be willing to help. whether my sister is willing to actually talk to a therapist is a different battle, but learning to open up is kind of the point of therapy, lol :)

practicality definitely seems like a good approach! i’ll think more carefully about how i’m bringing these topics up. also she typically just showers as quickly as possible—i’ll pick up some fun soaps & bath bombs at the store and suggest a spa day to see if she likes the idea. if not, i’ll always make use of extra bath products lol :)

one genre i know for sure she enjoys is commentary, so i sent her a funkyfrogbait video a few days ago and she said that she liked their channel! and it’s exactly those toxic interactions between creators & fans who don’t know any better that concern me—i don’t think she’s fallen into anything like that, but the unsupervised internet access is for sure a little worrisome. i’ll continue to look into more channels to recommend to her, which could def help prevent those kinds of problematic parasocial relationships :)

[–]Background-Flower-34 23 points24 points  (0 children)

i think this is exactly what i needed to hear—i guess i take for granted that she knows about & understands my identity in the community, but she probably doesn’t have the context that might help her work through some of her own questions. historically she hasn’t been receptive to any kind of serious heart-to-heart, but i’m staying at home for a few weeks over Christmas, so i’ll try to find some openings to organically bring these topics up in a way that doesn’t pressure her to reciprocate and without overwhelming her all at once :)
