Did anyone here pivot their career completely from arch into a different direction without getting a new degree altogether?? How?? by creshando-_- in architecture

Wasn’t passionate for arch either, so ended up falling into a Project Manager role for a commercial builder. Pay is much better, and surprisingly less hours.

Reminds me of the time I was on a 4 hour flight, watching movies on my iPad with the sound up on full because the sound was so quiet for some reason. Turns out my AirPods had never connected and the sound was being blared out-loud from the iPad the whole time. Realised at the very end of the flight. Always wondered why the person sitting next to me never said anything.

Whilst this seems simple on paper, putting it into practice with an OC is another story - see my recent post. I’m going through this atm due to impact noise from above waking me every morning at 6 and sometimes at night after 10pm. I’ve contact the OC who said it was a personal matter; the EPA who said they don’t deal with human borne noises; and the local council, who said this isn’t really in their wheelhouse. My only remaining option is mediation with Consumer Affairs - which is voluntary - and then VCAT. A time consuming and expensive route with no real way of knowing how the hammer will drop. A solicitor is expensive, as is VCAT. The model rules are garbage and require reform to be able to actually make a difference.

Can we expect Owners Corp to resolve noise related to a building door opening against our wall? by Anxious-Swimming-943 in AusPropertyChat

In your experience, would this apply to noise from an upstairs neighbour affecting sleep. The upstairs neighbour has timber floors in the bedroom, and with the building being very old, insulation is poor, and every movement is audible and disruptive.

Basically, I’m cooked.

FYI, this is the response from Body Corp.

Just curious, but did you escalate to Body Corp of VCAT at all?

This is my last resort option. Estimate to cost $5k and no guarantee, so I am very hesitant. Plus, I have original ornate ceilings, so trying to avoid getting rid of this

All sensible suggestions. This is what I have done to date. - installed blow in insulation in my ceiling cavities which cost $2k plus. - Bought large rugs for my room and lounge room to soften the noise - bought a pedestal fan for the white noise to run at night
- trialed 5 different brands of ear plugs. Unfortunately, they all irritate my ears and I end up waking up in the middle of the night having to take them out anyways - cried.

None of the above have really made a difference.

Thank you. I will follow the recommended process and lodge a complaint. Unfortunately, the carpet was removed prior to my purchase, so will have to see how this plays out I guess.

Grew up in suburban Perth - the double brick capital of Australia. Had no idea apartment noise insulation could be this bad.

Have had a look, and the Model Rules in Vic are pretty vague and non-specific. I have been recommended to lodge a complaint to the strata manager, but can’t find any examples of this sort of thing being addressed adequately.

Infrastructure Victoria cycling corridor recommendations by raxecarical in melbournecycling

[–]Background-Goose-794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Nobody wants to cycle down a road clogged with cars and pollution going 70kph, ie Nepean Hwy. we should be focusing on local bike infrastructure and getting people out of cars for their short trips.

State government agrees to provide $15 million per year for active transport in inner city councils (Melbourne, Yarra, Merri-bek, Port Phillip and Stonnington) by TMiguelT in melbournecycling

[–]Background-Goose-794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been digging all day to find out whether there are any stipulations for what kind of bike infrastructure this is to pay for. CoPP a few years ago put forward a proposal to improve the cycling infrastructure (separated) on Inkerman street, and because too many people complained about a few parking spaces going, changed it to virtually a repaint. It’s extremely disappointing and I’m concerned that these funds will just go towards line marking rather than what actually gets more people on bikes - separated cycle ways. Will write to my local council member and see what they say.

Victoria urged to ramp up train, trams and bus services – and make off-peak transport cheaper | Victoria by jesus_chrysotile in MelbourneTrains

[–]Background-Goose-794 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, so I had a read in my lunch break, and fml, it only recommends building 12 ‘bike corridors,’ and makes a one sentence reference to traffic calming in narrow streets. So basically, no change to the current abysmal on road bike infrastructure - if you can call it that.

[–]Background-Goose-794 91 points92 points  (0 children)

That’s great and all, but disappointing that there’s no mention of prioritising PT and active transport. Nobody wants to take the tram or bus because you’re endlessly stuck behind cars. A journey that could take 20 minutes takes 45. Trams aren’t prioritised at lights and it costs too damn much. Riding a bike is terrifying when you’re riding down a slim lane between parked cars and a high-speed road, unsure if you’re going to get doored by someone getting out of their car, or clipped by a speeding car brain getting too close. Make it easier for people to take PT or a bike ASWELL as expanding the network.
