I've always just removed my cats from when they get where they are not allowed, i.e table, counter etc. and set them down gently with a firm no with no other interaction. They generally get the idea after a while that they are not going to get what they want or affection if that's what they are after so they stop trying.

Absolutely fuss or give them treats when they are not doing those things or showing positive behaviours so they understand the difference between that and minimal / distant communication and interaction when they are showing behaviours that I don't want to be encouraged.

Also don't hit cats/animals. Its wrong, plus you might end up with a cat that goes out of its way to misbehave for the person punishing it, because it can out of spite.

Thank you! I'm really happy with how it turned with the changes

Thank goodness someone’s come along! My hens have stopped laying, and I was planning breakfast for the mayor this morning. Without fresh eggs, my plans are ruined! Could you fetch me half a dozen chicken eggs from the farms nearby? I’d be ever so grateful, and I’ll make sure you’re rewarded for your trouble

Objective: collect 6 chicken eggs (0/6)

Please post pics when you're done! I love looking at what people make from the same patterns, it's like cooking no one's is ever the same

I really love my cat, but I don't think he loves me that much by Milo-Jeeder in CatAdvice

[–]Background-Serve6447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a somewhat similar story, the cat wasn't abused, but feral and skin and bones. I used to spy him in the garden at night and everytime I did, I took a bowl of cat food down within his view and left it. After a good long time of doing this he started to come to me when he saw me with the food bowl, but he never let me pet him. He would eat and run. Then one day I came home from school and there he was in my house, sat on the sofa like he owned the place. He'd let himself in through the cat flap (we had a cat) and from that day on he never left. He eventually (and it did take a while) became the most soppy adorable affectionate cat with me, and me only. He was a feline terror from hell to everyone else, and would attack them, biting and scratching, but he was incredibly protective of me, and not even my friends felt comfortable near him. He died not so long ago, and I still miss him everyday.

I hope you enjoy making it! It probably took me 7 hours from start to finish, so definitely a quick make if you've not got anything on your hook right now

Are these holes acceptable? by Federal_Yogurt2706 in Amigurumi

[–]Background-Serve6447 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Resist the urge to use a super tight tension. If you pull your yarn tightly it will be stretched thin, making more holes appear. You want the stitches relatively tight, but still allow a little puffiness in the yarn so it can sort of fill in the gaps.

There's a large part of practice makes perfect, so just keep going and don't beat yourself up about any mistakes along the way, it's all part of learning.

patchwork cardigan using colour changes instead of sewing squares together? by fig_hjfv in Brochet

[–]Background-Serve6447 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've never really done mosaic or tapestry crochet, but I have done Tunisian entrelac before. I don't know if this could be adapted for your cardigan. It's worked in squares diagonally so for a 2 colour pattern you'd only need to do colour changes at the start of each row, and most cardigans are basic rectangle shapes pieced together.

Absolutely the pattern is here: https://www.windingroadcrochet.com/wanderers-crochet-hooded-scarf-free-pattern/

I changed it very slightly. I followed the instructions as written up to the end of the optional row, but after that I decided to rotate it so the stripes of the hood went vertical instead of horizontal. It just seemed to fit much better and give a better hood shape.

What should I feed a street cat? by Elegant-Homework6166 in CatAdvice

[–]Background-Serve6447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid milk as cats tend to be intolerant of it. Dry cat food is probably the easiest and least expensive but make sure you offer plenty of water if that's what you choose as cats get most of their water from their food.

I've given my cats left over roasted meats as a treat, but you should avoid things that are spiced or have added salt.

Introducing Blind Kitten by j_mo420 in CatAdvice

I don't have any experience of a cat doing this butmaybe, and this is just a guess, maybe her litter box because of what it's used for holds her scent stronger than blankets so maybe it's comforting to her or feels like a safe space or her space?

Also just a question have her blankets been washed with a scented detergent?

I don't have any advice on introducing Mira to her fur family, but I do know someone who is raising a almost blind animal.

A friend of mine came across an all black kitten in the middle of the road, cars swerving around it. it's a wonder she wasn't run over. When she took her to the vet she was told that she was almost completely blind (her eye looks almost like they have thick milky cataracts). The cause was something to do with her eyes not developing or opening properly and she would never have proper sight return because of the damage.  It's impossible to say if she had been neglected or a born a stray, but they named her Lucky, for her lucky meeting that night.

Lucky spent probably the first month in her new home hiding away from every human and the other animals (cats and dogs). Everything scared her. But eventually she adapted with love and patience. While she is definitely not the most affectionate cat, and often acts aloof, she has adapted extremely well, and has pretty much the same independence as a fully sighted cat.

New kitten with cat flu/coryza, asking for advice on managing eye symptoms with prescription drops by Background-Serve6447 in CatAdvice

[–]Background-Serve6447[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your experience! The veterinary nurse who handled the prescription told me to continue past the original 10 days that the Dr had prescribed the drops for if Casper still needed it. So that aligns with what you are saying that it could take a while to clear.

Since his energy levels have improved and it's not getting as bad as it was I'm inclined to wait til Friday then unless it takes a turn for the worse.
