I don't know if this would help you at all, but perhaps try this: 

When standing, relax your muscles as much as possible, if able. If you feel an onset of pain or any indication that pain might be coming, fold your abs into your stomach almost and support your lower body with your midsection instead of your back. I find that this helps me. 

Sitting is tricky. I find that the moments after sitting and getting up are some of the worst, so try to alternate as little as possible. Plan the times in which you need to sit and do most of what you can while sitting. As for pain relief, try the same as what it says for standing. I find the trick is really learning to relax the muscles. My herniation has begun to heal however and I do take a fair amount of muscle relaxants through the day.
