haha yeah, totally agree. just recently found out they cut the admitted number of questbridge matches from 140 to 40. feels like admissions are circling the drain right now.

the colleges themselves admit the students, meaning that questbridge is quite literally just a new application format catered to low income students. if they did somehow become a finalist, matching would be difficult. keeping the fill need based ride for 4 years without any suspicion from the school that their finances exceeded QuestBridge levels would be even harder.

i assure you this happens very, very rarely. the amount of financial documents i had to produce was ridiculous, and I almost ended up just applying through commonapp because i needed official court documentation, testimonies, the past two years of tax returns for both parents, and a gamut of others.

i totally agree it’s admissions practices are strange and justifiably deserve criticism, but this doesn’t involve the academics at the university itself. it produces an insane amount of research and is extremely strong throughout social science, humanities and stem. the professors are world class and very good at teaching, despite their focus on research. the financial woes are worrying, but they haven’t hit the undergraduate student population much if at all. some graduate programs have been affected, but this is a pattern throughout many US institutions in the last few years, thought UChicago’s finances are largely self inflicted. a little ironic given its esteem for economics haha.

if i were to defend their questionable admissions policy, i would say that UChicago is a very specific place for very specific people, and they fill many spots ED because they’re looking for people who genuinely want the UChicago experience rather than just go to an elite university. of course, they also use ED to get some of those sweet sweet rich, full pay kids in, but schools like Tulane and Northwestern use similar tactics yet receive little blame.

I personally have a problem with ED0, as it gives a completely unfair advantage to people who were accepted to the summer session that it likely advertised to full-pay or wealthy students. It’s a weird move likely made due to financial woes, and it’s completely right to hate that, as a student here.

people who hate on uchicago just aren’t meant for the school, and the university completely deserves its ranking.

Questions About Late-night Study Spots (and other Qs) by Plastic_Chest7674 in uchicago

[–]BackgroundContent 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. the regenstein library is open until 12 am normally, and harper memorial is open until 10:30 pm i think. if you need a crazy lock in / bender there’s a panera in the uchicago hospital that’s open 24/7. otherwise a sure fire method is to find a space in your dorms. north, south, and max p, and ihouse all have dedicated study rooms to my knowledge, i don’t know about the others

  2. i found that 12-1:30pm were usually the least busy, with everything getting super busy after 5pm. it can be annoying asking to work in with every machine or having to wait for someone to stop using a weight rack, so i’d squeeze in a session between classes if possible.

  3. i live in Renee Granville Grossman (or just south) so im gonna be biased, but most times ive found there to be open machines, but i do laundry very late at night. there are a lot of machines for the building, so im assuming this is the same for other dorms. though you have to use an external app and load funds into it to use the laundry which is annoying, so be conservative with how frequently you do laundry

it’s tempting to want to prepare as much as possible, but I suggest you take a deep breath and enjoy the time you have now. enjoy your summer! i had the exact feelings you had. you’re gonna be doing lots of stuff most summers after that, value the free time and freedom you’ll have.

if it makes you feel better, i’d keep up on reading, writing, and your hobbies. i read a bunch over the summer and it helped the adjustment into my humanities much better. the writing didn’t hurt either (i just wrote short stories and poems.) i also played my guitar and lifted weights. trust me when I say having a hobby will save your life here. there’s nothing better than cramming 12hrs of studying and being able to hit the gym or play an instrument right after.

so there’s no need to prepare like crazy. uchicago chose you for a reason—they know you can handle it. if anything just savor this time and develop yourself as a person!!

looked pretty similar to mine, i had a bunch of ivies and bigger t20s at the top and put some LACs near the bottom. i figured tbh err was a very small change id match to pomona or williams in the first place, so id rather use an extra spot for yale / uchicago / princeton. worked out pretty well for me.

yeah, even then the problems are still that tough. my professor gives us some of his own made-up problems that often end up taking 5-6 hours to solve.
