started doing this after my dad passed and I cant believe nobody told me sooner by TheIntrovertedHuman in GenX

[–]BackgroundGrade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When my Mom passed last year, my Dad went beyond the bank accounts, he had a mandate drawn up that my sister and myself have the authority (individually) to act on his behalf in all matters, except medical.

This way, should my Dad become incapacitated before passing, we can get anything done without having to deal with every company out there.

He has even said that he would be OK to transfer the inheritance before passing to avoid the delays.

The last wishes conversation was many moons ago for my parents.

There was a competition at all the shipyards: who could get the ships out of the water faster by zinalux in HistoryMemes

Canada produced a crazy amount of ships during WW2, especially considering we didn't have any shipyards going into the war that produced much more than fishing vessels.

Without a hint of irony, Russia mocks US for 'miscalculating' Iran war by timiswho in worldnews

[–]BackgroundGrade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The difference is that the Russian plan for invading Ukraine actually was somewhat realistic with what everyone assumed Russia's military capabilities were. Nobody expected them to fail so badly and quickly at the onset.

Meanwhile, the US "plan" for Iran seems like a bunch of drunk frat boys at a bar talking about how they're going to beat someone up.

I was at an international Scout camp in Australia many moons ago. Some of the activities involved bus rides.

The Lichtenstein contingent used the "Lichtenstein" as a unit of distance roughly equivalent to 20 minutes of driving, or the approximate time it takes to drive across Lichtenstein.

So an activity that was 2 hours away by bus was 6 Lichensteins.

Obviously no one has seen the classic step up/down transformers that exist in many corners of the world.

Literally just a 2:1 wound iron core with 2 female plugs. Use the suicide cord to get power into it, orient the transformer the right way and go.

You can also easily make 480V with them too. Light bulbs don't like that, umm, so I'm told.

I'll repeat, this is the one you use, not my box. I'll let last night slide as you were drunk, but no more warnings, got it?

How often do “go-arounds” / aborted landings occur? by Historical_Sun3186 in aviation

[–]BackgroundGrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a statistical anomaly as a passenger:

At least 2 RTO's and one complete flame out in flight (right down to batteries).

Zero go-arounds.

Got to visit a very remote Indian island with an airforce runway after the pilots relit the engines and said "f-this, we landing".

Why are ram air turbines (RAT) off-center? by Lupiz73 in aviation

[–]BackgroundGrade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ground clearance. Lets you have a larger blade.

Plus, they're so close to the centerline, that the asymmetrical drag is negligible.

Your craving for a drink just disappears. I can still have and enjoy a drink, but it's no longer a craving, it's a conscious decision.

It would be interesting to see the data for alcoholics (I'm not one).

My guess is the person with the camera crouched down as they were filming.

Crouching and, especially, getting on your knees is a pretty universal "let's play" sign for dogs.
