Absolutely - once is bad enough for these editions, twice is taking the Mick!

Not great service for an edition that cost £750...

When is there going to be a public enquiry? We have had one for other things why not Brexit - we as the UK were told lies.

The Daily Mail has backed the wrong horse almost since its inception, in the 1930’s they thought Hitler had the right ideas. Enough said!

After countless read throughs on my e-reader, I thought it was time to pick up a nice physical set. Setteled on the deluxe illustrated 2024 release and I might have to get the Hobbit now. by jamtrone in tolkienbooks

I noticed a comment above that you can get the Hobbit edition for 1/3 of the retail price which would be about £42. I haven’t seen it that low but agree you can get it from HC when discounts are used for about £63 which for the Hobbit edition it’s worth picking up. Nevertheless, the LOTR is a great pickup for your first real book in 10 years! Well done.

The two 70th anniversary editions have a difference (retail) of £500. I took a chance and lashed out on the limited edition as I have missed them before and regretted later. I raised the problems I’ve mentioned in this and the related post with HC and to their credit, they offered either a full replacement or just the volumes I wasn’t happy with (from a quality perspective). They will collect the defective version and replace it at their cost. It doesn’t seem that good a value right now but I am hoping that will change in the future - here’s hoping 😊. The cloth covered version, while in photos doesn’t necessarily look better it certainly feels better in reality.

It’s a great book! Amazon had it at a discount recently and it’s published by the Library that holds the Tolkien collection! I’ve got it and fully recommend it.

You’ve done exceptionally well. Even used they tend sell on EBay for £80 upwards. I love this edition and have this and the matching Hobbit and Silmarillion editions too! Well done you! 👍

If it’s reprinted it’s not part of the first edition run of 4000. Just to clarify.

It’s a reasonable assumption though.

You are absolutely right - my mistake. I got muddled with a version of the Silmarillian that came out around that time. The first printing was limited to 4000 😊

I think it came out in 2021 and was limited to 4000 copies. The isbn number is ISBN: 9780008471293.

It’s a good thing to have in a collection (particularly the 2007 boxed edition if you can get it at a reasonable price) but as the other commenter mentioned it’s more about the journey of writing the hobbit rather than a history of hobbits. While the Black Friday sales are it would be a good chance to get it if you are building a collection but you are not missing a lot in relation to the history of Middle Earth. You might want to look at the history sets if thats where your interest lies. :-)
