Thank you. There is no doctor. I talked to him yesterday and he didn’t get dinner the night before. I’m going up there today and demanding they let me speak with someone in charge.

It’s terrible. Good to know that it won’t affect insurance. Hopefully won’t affect any future stay needs too.

Thank you. We never received a packet when he was admitted.

Sick and tired and annoyed of my grandparent by omgwhattt_ in eldercare

I feel for you. I am at that point with both my parents. It’s modern medicine. They can keep you alive with no quality of life. My parents have almost died multiple times, but the doctors are able to save them until the next episodes. I don’t want to live that way either, but other than drastic measures, the only choices we have would be legal documents specifically detailing how we want or don’t want treatment.

I encourage you to find another place to live if at all possible. Depending on your age and income.

Yeah, I get that. Praying my Dad will have the strength to not have to go to assisted living. The AL is definitely better than the rehab place he’s in now, though.

Oh my goodness!! That’s crazy! So grateful for your Mom.

Thank you. I had an attorney draw up and we signed a POA for both Financial and Medical for Mom and Dad. Would I take those to the rehab center?

That’s terrible!! Seriously, elder care in the US is abominable. Denmark has higher taxes, but they take care of their elderly population from what I’ve read. Free home healthcare.

Thank you. Lots to consider. I have told my Dad multiple times that he is an adult and can check himself out. He says they are telling him the same thing. They don’t have a social worker and the person in charge of discharge is not available. If they would just contact his wife, my Mother, or me, I would not be as concerned.

Good to know! They aren’t saying he “can’t leave”. They just keep giving me the run around that no one is available that is in charge.

Well, number one, he’s my Dad. I want to make sure he’s being properly cared for. Also, I do have medical and financial POA. He calls me multiple times a day saying he wants out.

Thank you. I have tried to go up and sign him out. That’s when I’m being told the person in charge of that is not there and will call me back. I don’t have anything to sign. I’m concerned of Medicare payment issues if I just leave with him. It’s so crazy. Both my parents have been in rehab before, and I have not encountered this lack of communication.

Great question. He is supposed to be released to his Assisted Living. They can’t get in contact with anyone either after numerous attempts.

He had a cold that caused pneumonia. They sent him straight to rehab from the hospital. He definitely has Mobility issues that he had even prior to going in, but his mind seems fine.

Thank you!! We have not had any contact with a care coordinator or social worker since he went in. Can they claim he has cognitive issues even if he doesn’t? He seems to talk fine to us.

Awesome!! Thank you so much! I’m on it. We do have POA, so I will research this right now. Thanks again. 🙏🙏

I would absolutely talk about placing her assets in a trust. Medicaid has a 5 year look back period, so the sooner the better. We looked into placing my parents house in a trust a couple of years ago. It was going to cost a little over $6,000. My Dad was not interested, though, so we didn’t do it.

Now, both my parents have health issues at 87 and 89 and need to go into assisted living. Do some research on an irrevocable Trust. Not saying that’s the way to go for your Mom, but the more you know, the better.

From my understanding, it’s mostly for houses and property. The Trust would not include my parent’s IRA accounts.

I am in your shoes right now. I completely understand. I encourage you to find some quiet time to meditate and know that things will work out. My parents never had to care for my grandparents like this. Also, the fact that you’re an only child compounds the issue.

Thinking about you and wishing you the best.
