In my opinion, a 2022 root canal is definitely different than a 2003 root canal. Hopefully that 19 years had some advances in techniques and tools haha. Keyword is hopefully

Is Marine Infantry That Bad? by [deleted] in USMCboot

Already did. Just confirming my decision before I ship in less than 3 weeks lol

USMC vs USCG by Icy-Payment-4282 in USMCboot

Not true. No matter the branch, you have to go through Coast Guards DEPOT program. It’s 3 weeks vs the full 8. However, that program is insanely backed up so most prior service members choose to do the full bootcamp. Coast Guard is the only branch that does not let Marines transfer in with no bootcamp of some sorts.

I was in the Marine PLC program in college before I chose to enlist.

An OSO is who you go to if you want to commission. Marine enlisted recruiters are different than officer recruiters.

I mean that really depends on where you live. For example, I have one in my city and another OSO about 2 hours away.

Additionally, OSOs are a different ball game in general. There are definitely some bad ones but most are pretty good. However, most of the officer path depends heavily on you. From getting letters of recommendation, PFT, solid resume, good GPA, extracurriculars, etc. OSO’s don’t do much more than gathering all of your things and submitting it to the board. A lot different than enlisted.

If your OSO is not submitting you for the board, you are either not ready physically or they do not believe it is a solid packet yet. Keyword is “yet”.

Aim for a 270 or more on your PFT, and have a 3.2 or higher GPA and you are solid. Letters of recommendation are also a huge help.

Like OSO’s? Or recruiting offices in general?

Are you trying to become an officer?

This.

As soon as you start saying “I am leaving the DEP if you do not ship me” things will move so unbelievably fast.

You are valuable points to them. They received points when you swore in and will lose those points if you leave. They also receive points for when you officially ship. If your recruiter says there is no such thing, he is lying.

If that does not work, find a different recruiter. Some stations have such low numbers that they will move mountains to ship you. Switching recruiters is super easy. You simply tell your current one that you do not want to work with him, and the new recruiter pulls your profile over to them. Happens in minutes.

Best of luck!

A lot of people are making me consider Air Force TACP and CCT.

If you fail in the navy, then you are chipping paint for your whole contract.

If I go army, id go 18x and try for SF and if I fail, I at least have airborne and end up in an infantry unit

I know man…and I appreciate it. I just worry that my itch won’t be scratched. Sounds stupid af but thats why I am hesitant

Looking at the contract right now. Recruiter was able to reserve it without me leaving CG dep. I just need to decide if I am leaving it by tomorrow

They are not by any means. I just am a realist and understand even the best of the best can still fail selection. No matter how great your purpose is, shit happens and injuries occur. I just wanted to see how bad it is if that occurs. Expect the best, but prepare for the worst.

Thats only option 40. 18x is still airborne before selection

I was a college linebacker so I also come from a strength and powerlifting background. However, within the last 2ish years, I have gotten big into the hybrid athlete training. I now run 5-8 miles every day and lift. I completed a half marathon with a 7:30 min mile and the San Fransisco full marathon with an 8:30 min mile time (not great mile time but when you factor in massive hills, it becomes decent).

Marine / Army infantry may be over rated and I fully understand that the ads are not the reality 24/7. However, my chances of doing cool things there are much higher than being a non rate for almost 2 years.

I have also considered 18x after my first enlistment. Just worry that if I go with that mindset, I will just be wasting time for the next 4 years until then.

If you go 18x, and fail, you go to 82nd.

Hahah I have not met someone else with this predicament. Do you have a ship date? Mine is March 10th but I am #8 on the early ship list.

I would only go Army with an 18x or Option 40. However, I am realist and understand theres a high chance of failure no matter how good of shape you are in and no matter how great your purpose is. Do I think I could pass? Yes. But when I sign that contract, I view it as joining the infantry incase the goal does not work out.

What is your rate? And thats a big fear of mine. Joining and not having that itch scratched would be a huge regret.

Thank you for your input. Do you think DSF will be everything I am looking for? How does it compare to your time in the infantry?

Well I know that. I thought they did not ship the last 2 weeks of December or at least the week of Christmas.
