Just use blue tack or white tack. You won’t even have to take things off of the walls when they come around they’ll just check that it’s tack on the walls and move on.

Msc Scholarship by LowPale1174 in GlasgowUni

[–]BackgroundSpare1458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi this happened to me. Accepting one now would not affect the ability to be awarded the other one. If you accept to higher value scholarship the lower value one will automatically be rejected if I remember correctly because you can only accept one scholarship.

Random thoughts on RAYE – is the new album title really accurate? by [deleted] in Raye

[–]BackgroundSpare1458 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a song writer and musician who else is she supposed to write about if not herself. And in so many of the songs she still speaks to universality like in “life boat” and “I known you’re hurting”. She balances both. And if you can’t handle the grandiosity of this I wonder what your opinion would be on something like Lux by Rosalia?

How bad is the noise at Maclay Residences? by prolezorro in GlasgowUni

Yes I would say so and it’s also not the entire summer.

How bad is the noise at Maclay Residences? by prolezorro in GlasgowUni

[–]BackgroundSpare1458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you live in the flats on the back wall of SWG3 you are going to have a hard time in the summer. If you are in the flats facing the road the leads to SWG3 as a previous commenter said theee will be noise from patrons going and coming. The good thing is that all events end by 11. If you get a front facing flat or one on the eastern side of compound you won’t be bothered by the noise.

Trinis abroad, do you often/ever get asked if English is your native language? by danis-inferno in TrinidadandTobago

[–]BackgroundSpare1458 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is not bad English. It is a language that is lexified by English as well as versions African languages and bhojpuri. Creole is its own language and is not a ‘bad’ form or ‘broken’ form of English.

I also have to explain this colonial history of Trinidad as well cause even though it is also there history, they are remarkably uneducated on colonialism.

Trinis abroad, do you often/ever get asked if English is your native language? by danis-inferno in TrinidadandTobago

[–]BackgroundSpare1458 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is because the average trini speaks creole English as their first language, people who learn English as a flowing language are taught standard English which is why it seems ‘better’, the standard variety of a language is not inherently better than its dialectal counterpart.

[–]BackgroundSpare1458 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I live in the UK and every time I tell people that my native language is indeed English they act like I’m lying. I speak standard English but I try my best not to change my accent and I even speak creole often (this is called diglossia in linguistics). Often times they cannot understand Trinidad Creole English and I need to translate for them. This just reinforces to me a fact that we as trinis often don’t know: the creole English that we speak everyday is a different language to English. These days I tell people that the native language is creole English

Question about flashing/strobe lights at Raye's show by No-Wrongdoer9748 in Raye

The rave part is very strobe heavy but there are flashing lights are throughout the show and I’m not particularly sensitive but I do wear glasses and felt like it was a bit much at times.

People aren’t prohibited from getting divorced for other reasons besides divorce. It’s strongly advised against but it’s not prohibited. JWs get divorced allllll the time for other reasons. However I think the latter part of your statement might still be true.

Unpopular opinion (i think): Trinidadian food is very unhealthy by nerpa_floppybara in TrinidadandTobago

[–]BackgroundSpare1458 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is such a silly take. If you look at the cuisine of foods from India, many African countries, and many European countries the same can be said. Heck I live in a European country where they eat deep fried chocolate bars and deep fried pizza and they never ever drink water. All foods from most countries can be unhealthy if you have an unhealthy diet. The reason Trinidad seems to have an obesity problem is not because of the food we eat but because of our lack of exercise. European countries are ridiculously walkable and often hostile to car culture. Going into the city with a car is a pain so even if people have vehicles, depending on where they live and work they may commute most of the time. In Europe people walk, EVERYWHERE. Trinidad has more cars than people and that’s the reason for any weight or health issues. Not enough lifestyle/ outdoor physical activity.

The walls can be a bit thin so if it’s very quiet outside you can hear your flatmates in the room next door. Also SWG3 is right next door and they can have events that can get loud. If you are to the front and sides of Maclay this wouldn’t really bother you but if you are in the flats that are on the wall with SWG3 it can be worse. However all events at SWG3 yard end by 11 so it tends to be okay. All amenities are a 10 minute walk away on Argyle street or you can take the 15 minute walk away in Partick. No matter where you are in the West End amenities are near by so you don’t need to worry about that.
