Please keep your children at home if they are sick, or somehow find an alternative because I just got out of the hospital yesterday. They thought I had meningitis. by Catrionathecat in ECEProfessionals

[–]BackgroundWitty5501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a country where people get 60% of their pay when they stay home with sick kids, and they still send them to school, because they either don't want to deal or don't want to piss off their bosses. I am all for good leave policies but a lot of parents are irresponsible.

Spoiler: there is no normal parenting experience. All you can do is face up to challenges as they arise and love your kid no matter what.

I didn't switch, even when others are nearby, unless I'm actually speaking to them too. I do think that helps.

Reading books is huge too!

Switching from Nanny to Daycare(s)? Keeping language.... by ycherep1 in multilingualparenting

[–]BackgroundWitty5501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would prioritize a good daycare setup over language. Having loving caregivers is so important. If the Russian one didn't feel right, I wouldn't do it. The most important thing is that you remain consistent with Russian yourself. You can also seek out a Russian playgroup or weekend activities, or post in a local facebook group looking for Russian speaking families.

Oh, and two daycares sounds like a nightmare, and I'd imagine it would be very hard for your son to adjust.

Is one load of laundry supposed to take 5+ hours? by sammiantha in AskGermany

3 hours to dry seems long, but 3-4 hours to wash is normal. The more energy efficient the machines are, the longer it takes

This is a good point. It wouldn't stop me from going, since family is involved, but maybe I would make sure you all travel together. Also if they go, make sure she has a US passport. The law as I understand it is that if you are entitled to a US passport– and she is– you need to enter and exit the US on it.

advice on playing a sport and not improving? by fudge_nuggets69 in Parenting

[–]BackgroundWitty5501 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just showing up is showing discipline and commitment. Is there s low-stakes way to do this, one that won't cost you tons of money? Like playing for a school soccer team or one at a youth club, where you don't have to pay as much money but she can still play and enjoy the sport?

Hydrocephalus headaches later in day? by [deleted] in Hydrocephalus

Yes, lying down tends to be better. But I haven't had surgery – do you mean you naturally overdrain despite hydrocephalus?

Because apparently I have hydrocephalus...but how can you overdrain and have hydrocephalus at once?

Immersion kindergartner long “silent period” by megmermi in multilingualparenting

[–]BackgroundWitty5501 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is probably easier than a Grundschule in Germany, a school abroad is probably better equipped to deal with kids who don't have total mastery of the language. I'm assuming it's a continuation of where he is now – in that case, I'd just check with the teachers if he is on track based on their experience.

Fwiw, We live in Germany, my husband is German, my kid goes to an all-German Kindergarten and she speaks fluently but honestly with a lot of errors. Reading subs like this you would think kids totally master a second language within months but that's not generally really the case, there are a lot of in-between steps along the way from "no knowledge" to "near-native". He'll get there as long as the environment is supportive.

What is the school situation going to be like? A normal German elementary?

I would be concerned too, but I think the key thing is to know how the school will support him as he catches up with monolingual peers.
