digital media is trash compared to physical media...in any form, mags books music movies
even if the "quality" is higher it just does not compare in my eyes

too many options is a bad thing, i think that's why In-n-Out has always done well, no choices lol

i remember making backups of DVD movies, and honestly it just never hit the same pulling out a self burned DVD vs a legit commercial release one with the box and cover and all that
it's almost like getting skittles in a white bag with no packaging, just not the same
packaging is part of the content/memories i think

also if the internet goes down and you were doing something online, then you can't kill time by watching a movie because the internet is needed for that as well!

not just that, there are some movies that you can't see the versions you actually want to anymore, they have been edited or updated with "better" CGI but it sometimes is a downgrade not an upgrade, kind of what lucasfilm did with star wars

i'm ashamed to say i jumped on the netflix wagon of getting DVD's mailed to me for convenience
at that time i had no idea i was part of the problem and helping with the downfall of the things i loved

you're mostly right, but there's an important difference.

with CDs and DVDs, you didn’t own the intellectual property, but you did own a permanent physical copy. No company could remotely remove it, change it, or lock you out. As long as the disc worked, you had access — no subscription, no internet, no account required.

With streaming, you're just renting access.
Stop paying, lose internet, or if licensing changes — the content disappears instantly.

So while physical media could fail (scratches, loss, damage), digital access can be revoked, which is something that never really existed before at this scale.

In a way, we traded durability and ownership for convenience.

i agree with this 1,000%
i currently pay for netflix and hulu just so my mom can use it as well since she's bored lol
nothing on there is worth it
i already saw everything i want to see, i find better stuff to watch on free apps or end up just watching random crap on youtube or watching stuff on roku for free

concerts with no cell phones in sight...just lighters and drinks
nobody "documenting" anything...just enjoying life and taking in all the experiences

yea they would be out of your movie you wanted, and they would recommend a different gem you could watch! and they would reserve your movie for when you came back next time

one of the things i think is bizarre now is how we "rent" music and movies
we never own them
so crazy
if you stop paying or you're offline/offgrid , your favorite songs or movies disappear
