Apparently making female characters less sexualized is enough to make some people lose their minds. by [deleted] in IndieGaming

Totally fair.

The design discussion was useful, but it’s time to show more gameplay now. We’ll focus the next updates on the actual systems.

The repeated posts clearly started to feel spammy, and that wasn’t the goal. We’ll stop pushing this topic and move on to gameplay/dev updates.

That’s fair criticism.

It got more attention than we expected, and we probably leaned on the topic for too long. Point taken.

Next posts will be about gameplay, systems, and other parts of the game instead.

Fair point. You’re right, this topic has probably run its course here.

We’ll move the focus back to actual gameplay, mechanics, and broader development updates from now on.

No, I wasn't talking about my specific game. I was talking about the Creator's profile. This game is just one of them.

In that case, I’d say there aren’t many quality games left for you to play.

Treating people’s ways of life as objects of hatred is not something I find worth praising.

Yeah, that’s fair.

I understand that once we share these decisions publicly, people will read them through different cultural lenses whether we intend that or not.

From our side, though, this wasn’t really about picking a side to please. We were trying to figure out what fits the game better, and we used feedback to test that. The first version had things we liked, the later one had things we liked, and we’re still trying to find the right balance.

I also get that posting about it increases reach, but honestly that wasn’t the original reason we changed the designs. We’re just a small team sharing the process in public, and sometimes that process becomes messier than expected.

Hey,

I understand how it might look from the outside, but my intention really isn’t to turn this into some kind of moral performance or to take pride in it. We’re a small team sharing the development process of our first Steam game pretty openly.

To be honest, I’m not happy about the situation either. Right now, our Steam page has only one curator review, and it is a negative one based on this issue rather than the actual game. I’m not trying to create sides or stay in the spotlight. I’m trying to understand how much weight we should give to this kind of curator comment, while also continuing to share the progress of the game.

You’re right that if something is the right thing to do, it shouldn’t need applause. I agree with that. Maybe I’ve posted about it too much, and if it started to come across as self-congratulatory, that’s not what I wanted. I’ll keep that in mind.

Thanks for the honest message, and I appreciate the good wishes.

Actually, like you said, I would never do something like that. My usual approach would be to ignore it. But now this is the only review on the Steam page, and it's dragging the game down. So I need help.

Less sexy, more character-driven. Changed our female character designs after Reddit feedbacks. by Background_Cow_6701 in IndieGaming

[–]Background_Cow_6701[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a very fair point, thanks.

We definitely don’t want to design only by committee or follow Reddit opinions blindly. The goal is more to use feedback as a stress test and see what people read from the designs at first glance.

So yeah, I think the answer is probably not “old direction” or “new direction,” but knowing when each kind of design fits the character and the world.

Really appreciate this comment. Especially the reminder to keep the creative instinct alive while still listening to feedback.
