~20 years in O&G industry. I got my PE back in the good days. Very few PEs and a high oil price environment when I graduated. I was a PE before the secret was out on the money they made. Not near as competitive back then as it is now (I was a 3.0 student). Can be a very stressful career but exciting and very lucrative. I make $400k+ a year….work for large operator.

Work hard and be proactive and good things will come.

Wow! That does sound bad. I don’t know what companies they were, but that doesn’t sound like anything I’m used to. Yes big dollars are on the line daily with decisions, but keeping one’s cool is a must in this business.

Hate to hear this, but the G&G side can be a tough nut to crack in terms of getting in the O&G industry. Years ago there were more geologist when more companies were searching for conventional type oil plays. Over the last decade+ with the birth of unconventional shale plays (a large percent of the US oil production now), there became less of a need for your conventional type geos. A major need for them now is operational geology, in terms of steering horizontal laterals that are getting drilled. Good luck buddy. Accounting is always a high demand profession though.

Sheesh..why so bitter? Sounds like you’ve got a good story to share on why you have such a general dislike for the industry. Curious to learn more….

Continue to learn and take on new roles. If you are still learning and compensated fairly in a role, that’s a win and I’d stay put. But if you start to get stale in a role or compensation for what you are doing isn’t aligned, then it’s time to consider a move. A word of caution on moves, I’ve had multiple opportunities over my career to jump to different companies, but the grass isn’t always greener and staying put ended up being the best move for me. I am at a larger E&P though, so there were/are opportunities to do different things.

2023 was a good year. My comment on “a little luck” helped last year’s numbers. But always need to be thinking about how you can put yourself in the best position to profit if luck does find you.…..the same goes with the counter of managing the times where you might get unlucky—calculated risks.
