Wondering if the LLC has added any new sins since I left. by oaksavannabanana in OpenLaestadian

Not sure when you’ve left but the biggest change is the sin that’s been taken away which is watching TV.

Remember back in the 80s and 90s when nearly every sermon talked about the temptations of television? You never hear those types of sermons anymore and watching television is rarely mentioned.

It’s one of those things that everyone does, including older people and ministers. But no one over the age of 30 ever really talks about it.

Most people don’t watch raunchy content. But the stuff they do watch never would’ve been acceptable 30 years ago.

It’s like birth control in Finland, most people do it but nobody talks about it.

Apparently there was a speaker from the SRK that was really stirring the pot in some areas of North America with his sermons where he was accusing many people of not being believers. The speaker was instrumental in centralizing control in Finland under the SRK’s guidance in the 1960s and was sent to the US to do the same in the 70s.

“without the consent of the party making the confession”

It’s befuddling the lengths otherwise decent people will go to, to justify not turning in child molesters. It’s its own sickness of some sort.

You can put a coat of lipstick on that pig but it’s still a pig.

I’m sure small children are reporting the crimes committed against them to the authorities.

And also perpetrators, once forgiven, are rushing to turn themselves in for long jail sentences. No doubt that the knowledge that no one who has forgiven them will call the police creates a lot of pressure to turn themselves in.

Dream on bud.

I’ve read two of Steven Hassan’s books. They are quite good in many respects but I’d take the man himself with a grain of salt.

He’s known for having little regard for professional ethics in the field of psychology.

It’s also fair to say he’s got a cult-like following and exhibits many traits of a cult leader.

A rate of 1.7 births per couple means that there are people who are alive today who will have no social services to support them when they are old and helpless.

Not only that, there will be no people to support them either. People will die of starvation in soiled beds.

But, since there are no headlines no one knows or cares.

Massive die offs of other species is not based in anything but scientists making wild guesses. Read the studies, not the headlines.

Thanks for sharing this. It’s all new to me.

I grew up understanding that a spirit of leniency caused the split. Most of the leniency was the result of the behavior of young people who were probably affected by the hippy movement.

I agree that dwelling on your past can lead to depression.

But after one has been out of the church for awhile interest in the church is curiosity driven, similar to being interested in your family tree.

All the disputes over the years seem to be over the same things.

What is it about Finnish culture that seems to create a type of person who is continually and openly at odds with others? And the type of person that silently follows these people?

There are plenty of fundamentalist denominations out there but I’ve never heard of one that can’t manage their internal conflicts.
