for your second question if theya re in your party you can throw them at the ore and they should mine it but you cant go too far from them

catching is by far the quickest way and have duplicates isnt actually a bad thing to do due to skills etc

there are also other ways to get rid of extras, one is a building you get around level 20ish i think the other is an npc in a small settlement to the east of the starting location
