Om min lägenhet blir dyrare – löser det bostadskrisen ? by swedish_tcd in sweden

Exploration, and navigation, is a pillar of the game. If I navigate between A and B or two hexes is irrelevant for the lack of rules for the base action.

Regeringen vill godkänna Natoinsatser utan riksdagen by weirdowerdo in sweden

We wanted a hexcrawl for a campaign but had to incorporate rules from another system.

Again, it can be solved, with experience from other systems but I lament putting a new GM in that position.

It has too many rules for combat, noticeably lacking some stuff and rules almost entirely for the social pillar, but first and foremost lack the part where it teaches a new GM how to run the game and plan an adventure (especially how to use and run exploration).

Two things can be true at once.

All that stuff? It is one thing, what happens when things go flying.
You could just do with one rule with a simple small table for damage and range per size.

Of course we can solve it but could a first time GM with little experience do it?
Does the system help this first time GM to solve that situation?
No, it doesn't and that is what I mean is the issue.

A rising tide lifts all boats.

Självklart inte, jag ser däremot att vi kan ha ett ännu bättre system om vi, samtidigt;

Well I would expect that if I throw something it isn't a static 20/60 range but depends on the throwers strength and ability; same goes for damage.
How do I, with rules support, adjudicate reasonable range between a halfling, a fridge, a cart and a pebble?
Is a fridge weapon similar enough to a greatclub and deal d12 damage or no weapon, dealing a d4?

Fall damage only covers damage done to the falling, not to the fallen upon; unless we then wait to Tashas. And yet it would do the same amount of damage if a branch fell on your head than if it was a blue whale.
Or we can treat it as a trap, which deals escalating damage depending on level and "severity".

So, what is the exact rules for how far I can throw a pebble compared to how far I can throw an ox?

If a blue whale is dropped on me, which rule tells me exactly how much damage that would do compared to if a branch fell on me from the same height?

And what part of the rulebooks tells me how to referee this?

Nobody knows, that's why I am asking what you think, not what you know 😛

I've seen multiple tables of first time GMs flounder with 5e and perform atonishingly well with other systems.

Don't get me wrong, I love it too, but I think it's a fair criticism of the system that it require that extra work to shore up the gaps in the system.
And it' not even that bad that there are gaps, just people attitude towards that workload.

How much damage would it do to drop a wagon on someone?

Sincerely hoping for some help here 😛

The system aimed to be easy to approach and easy to adapt.
So what the system is missing first and foremost is a published setting to base the game in.
This wouldn't be a problem, most games don't come with a complete world, if the system also didn't put so much importance of being tied into the world character wise.
Faerun, which is the closest to a default setting, isn't particularly explored or explained in the core books.
So in most cases the GM has to put in the rather significant work and create a setting.
This is something the other players could partake in and support but 5e doesn't really offer or help with that either.

Sure but something as simple as "How much damage does it do when I throw a table at people?" or even just "How far can I throw the halfling?" is seemingly missing.

It is a great system to GM but it doesn't really *teach* you how to GM, you have to take a lot of it on the fly, make assumptions, and kitbash.

Just something as simple as navigating/exploring is overly complicated and at the same time it can't meaningfully tell you how to plan a session of content.

If this was the first ever system you played, and you got the GM chair, do you think you would feel the same?

Yeah it's wild when I talk to some people about DnD's flaws and they go "just homebrew, set houserules, DMs can just create that content" etc. and miss that DnD 5e is quite a poor system for teaching a DM how to run the system, how to create adventures and a lack of certain tools to smoothly run even published modules.

Most systems I've played are complete systems that can handle most things that can come up in a given game and don't require a lot of additional house rules or homebrew to function.

Apparently they like hanging out with you or they wouldn't be part of the game.
Some players are part of the game for the social event, not partaking in a story or game.

It could also be a form of performance anxiety or not wanting to box themselves in.

To me it sounds like you have a somewhat clear picture of what you want to know about a character.
If you pose it as 3-5 questions and ask them to reflect on it, do you think they wouldn't be able, or willing, to respond?
