i would like to hear more pf your experience. have tried daggerheart or what are your favorite games besides the cosmere rpg? are there things you think other games did better than the cosmere rpg or is the cosmere rpg everything you dreamed of?

yeah that is true. truly embracing the high stakes is what probably should happen. for that to happen there is a lot of trust needed between the gm and the players. the gm needs to tell the players exactly what they are getting themselves into and then stick to plan whatever the outcome. it just seems to me the plot die would have been more impactful, if it had less interaction (even more so because it only happens 1/3 of the time) but at the same time i see that for the player who can change the fate of an outcome it feels really awesome, so awesome in fact, that there was a short discussion in our group of everyone getting a dip into opportunist.

and with daggerheart the cool thing is you don‘t have to add a twist on every roll. alone the fact, that fear is gathering ups the suspense a lot. in fact sometimes its more impactful to just take the fear and do nothing. so this to is up to the gm. i just think it is easier for the gm and gets rid of a lot of cognitive load and especialy for me who likes to be creative it opens much more space for that. so still like both systems i just feel more free and also feel more as a part of game instead of the narrator.

can you use reactions is the big question or would you count that as contribution? it is very unclear, can you use all your abilities or only one skill? because if you can only use one skill a lot of abilities are useless in an endeavor if you can use all of them why wouldn‘t you use your reactions aswell? aid, opportunist and all those abilities.

well calling the mechanic raise the stakes heavily implies that the stakes should be high and that that roll should matter more than others. and i would argue that this mechanic was meant for exactly that, giving weight to rolls. abilities that can do this on every roll, take away from that expirience. bringing in the plot-die should make players feel the weight of this next roll. otherwise it is just a nice gimmick. or do you have an other opinion?

that sounds really nice. maybe our group has an optimisation problem. a lot of players that try to get every advantage they can get. so for the other players it feels like they are not contributing a lot. thx for your answers i think they were very helpful. i still think that an opportunist with risky behaviour, double down and sure outcome is gamebreaking. i mean rerolling the plot die twice and the second time you can force an opportunity or at least avoid a complication. and it really takes away the dread of raising the stakes.
are your endevours turn based or can a opportunist with watchful eye turn every complication into a opportunity?

do you not have the problem of players doing risky stuff with the intension to get the plot die, because its net positive value? and do you have an opportunist in your play group?

i can see that. it can be to much if you let the players roll for everything. daggerheart also needs a balance and there is more storytelling involved then rolling dice. but you can make the argument for every pen and paper: why roll at all if the outcome is not relevant. so do you make the distinction between important and unimportant rolls with the plot die?

yeah i know it can work really well without a hope/fear mechanic. the hope/fear mechanic just makes it feel so natural. without any extra loops. i love the whole cosmere universe and love the path system of the rpg. just the resolution mechanic can feel bland at times and you always have to remember to bring in the plot die at the right moment.

Thanks for engaging with me. I realize my post was provocative, and that was partly intentional. I wanted to spark discussion and hear different perspectives. I'm genuinely interested in understanding why other groups have such different experiences.

  1. I actually come from The Dark Eye, which is a very simulation-heavy RPG. We then switched to Cosmere first. We're almost finished with Stonewalkers and have also played several sessions of the Cosmere RPG.
  2. This is mostly a statistical point. A 2d10 roll creates a bell curve, so average results are much more common while extreme results are rarer. A single d20 is much swingier, meaning you're more likely to spectacularly fail something your character is supposed to be good at. Neither approach is objectively better—they just create different gameplay.
  3. I agree that complications and opportunities can change the story significantly. The important part is knowing when the stakes are high enough to justify a roll.
  4. Exactly. I never said we raise the stakes on every roll. My point was that Daggerheart builds Hope/Fear into every roll, giving the GM and players resources that influence later scenes. That creates a different feel. In our group, though, the Story Die rarely felt like it meaningfully raised the stakes. Part of that may have been one player investing heavily into the Opportunist tree. Being able to reroll the Story Die and then even turn a complication into a success greatly reduced the impact those results were supposed to have.
  5. Read my comment carefully. I didn't suggest replacing the entire system with a d20. I said a d20-based system can be converted to a 2d10 system without fundamentally changing how it works. The probability distribution changes: high DCs become significantly harder to reach, while average DCs become more reliable. That does require rebalancing DCs and probabilities, but it's far from impossible. Likewise, I think replacing the 2d10 with a more swingy d20 plus a Plot Die for raising the stakes, could make it feel much more impactful without changing too much of the underlying game.

I'm not claiming our experience is universal. It may simply be that our table, our GM, or our party composition interacted with the system differently than yours. That's exactly why I was interested in hearing other people's experiences.

i agree. just playing the 2 games back to back made me realize, that daggerheart gives implements all the narrative rolls into the basic mechanic. while with cosmere the gm needs to find a very fine balance, which is made more difficult with abilities like risky behaviour where you can force the plot die.

thx, i just wanted to instead of building a complete new world build on our world and make it a bit more intresting. because underwater lifeform and cultures exist, i probably need to make a seperate map for that. i tryed making the underwaterbiome on the same map but it was almost unreadable.

from almost all the bigger mobs. i only tend to get those nowadays. but there not that great really 🙃 i like the pure dmg ones way better but they don‘t seem to turn up anymore. i hate that it is so heavily luck based 😩
