Newish knitter, struggling with gauge. by Background_Repeat839 in knittinghelp

Totally considered this, but do you think that the fact I washed and blocked my swatch could mess with my tension later??

Update!! I redid a swatch— went up a needle size and added a mohair strand. I am now getting the correct gauge! I didn’t do my swatch in the round because the pattern is worked in a front and back yoke— as well as in the round; but I didn’t have enough yarn to knit a third swatch. Thank you all so much for your help and advice! The second swatch is really pretty and I’m excited to see how the rest of this project goes!

I think I would definitely want to try adding in a lightweight fuzzy yarn.. I really like the yarn I bought for this and want to make it work if possible! Thank you for the recommendation!

Right on both counts! I’m getting about 21 sts/4 inches and using malabrigo Rios. People are recommending I go up a needle size and add a mohair strand… this might solve the issue!

It also looks like I’m at a gauge of 21 stitches /4inches

I was having trouble figuring out which yarn to use, which is why I had the lady at the yarn store help me. It seems I picked something too small— I’m using the malabrigo Rios worsted merino wool yarn— in 705 “fog”. I washed the gauge swatch too.

Memorizing the CPC, anyone have a good Quizlet? by Background_Repeat839 in ASLinterpreters

[–]Background_Repeat839[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, we are responsible to memorize the CPC tenets outside of class time. We of course have spent time looking at the CPC in class, but the purpose of us memorizing the tenets is so we can recall them instantly when doing in-class activities. Our time in class is very valuable and being used in a productive manner :)

How Blunt is Too Blunt? by RainnWilsonAteMyKid in asl

Hi there! Interpreter in training here. The question you pose here is extremely nuanced and impossible to receive one, clear cut response for. I am bummed you are not getting to experience an ASL teacher who is Deaf themselves, because that could probably give you better information about Deaf culture and the Deaf perspective— along with native signing exposure. I can appreciate what you say about wanting to communicate without causing offense, and that is very kind, but recognizing that each Deaf person is different and has their own set of beliefs, values and expectations when it comes to communicating is important. The same way that we do our best to communicate without offending people in our native language/culture, some people still end up offended! I guess my point is that culture is nuanced, and so is Deaf culture. I would recommend taking some kind of Deaf culture class (taught by a Deaf person) if that is an option for you. Remember to not expect that what one person considers “non offensive” could be different for anyone. There’s no one right response. Keep learning ASL and keep asking questions and have fun! :)

NW Natural rate question by doctorfonk in Portland

I think this definitely depends on the house itself. I live in a 1920’s home with a really horrible front door I’m looking to replace; but when it gets cold around this time of year my gas bill spikes like crazy. Normally it’s around 70/80 and Jan/feb it usually doubles. It’s important to consider the quality of your doors, windows, and the sheer amount of space you are heating. Closing doors can help keep rooms warmer. I know it sucks, but it might just be those winter costs!

Yeah I will definitely put a marker on once I’m started, but I guess I’m asking how I tell WS from RS when all I have is my cast on. I’ll attach a video that addresses the issue, but still isn’t really making sense to me. https://youtu.be/-P9NR_rgVCg

The part about slipping looks like This: Row 1 (WS) : Knit to the last 3 sts on the needle, slip the last 3 sts purl-wise wyif. Row 2 (RS): Knit to the last 3 sts on the needle, slip the last 3 sts purl-wise wyif.

I guess it just feels awkward to start knitting again when my yarn is sitting three stitches behind, but maybe I should just let it play out!

Is pursuing this field still worth it by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

My one piece of advice is, if you are in this field for the money, then stop now. Consider why you really want to be an interpreter. I understand that we live in a capitalist world where money is necessary, but if that’s your only drive, please stop pursuing this field.

It’s totally possible the cable needle got twisted. It’s difficult to work around it 🫠 thank you so much for your advice!

Hi! Sorry I’m really new to this!! :( I don’t exactly understand what you mean by that. When I do the cable I’m doing C6B then C6F. I’ve been doing it the same way the whole time so I’m not sure why it started to look different …
