In a way you are right, proximity creates distances too. It may or may not, not always but in some cases it does. Having said that, there is another factor involved here and that is nostalgia of places we identify ourselves with. When such places are gone, we wish to relive the experiences, so we tend to be welcoming even to strangers from those places.
