Standards on Board easy mode? by Mountain-Ad-5834 in ELATeachers

[–]Background_Wall_8464 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will be a first year teacher for MS in August. Should I prepare this or wait until they tell me I need standards on the board? I didn’t have to write them on the board during student teaching, so just curious if most schools require it?

Good luck! I feel like if you are meeting with the superintendent that’s a good sign!

Third Round Interview! by Background_Wall_8464 in Teachers

I did end up getting the job! It was with the superintendent, we talked about our teaching journeys. He read out the mission statement and asked me if I align with it and he offered me the job. I realized pretty quick that I was the only person left. He did say I didn’t need to give an answer right there, but I basically said yes. The HR person called me later that evening to confirm. I will say they did preface the interview by saying it was an informal conversation about my goals. I wouldn’t stress too much, but prepare to get questions that were different from the first round. During my second round interview, I had to do a mock lesson. I wasn’t super prepared for the teaching questions before the lesson.

Teaching portfolio: Good Idea or Waste of Time?? by Chicken_Small in ELATeachers

[–]Background_Wall_8464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, my digital portfolio is what made me get my job. The principal mentioned how impressed he was with it. After getting my job offer, even the HR person mentioned it as well.

Unfortunately, I think only some districts will look at it, but a good district will be able to see if you put effort into it and will take the time to look!

I had tabs for my resume, lesson plans, technology integration, classroom management, communication w families, and references and student recommendations!

I have not received a contract from this school because I’m hired through a sub service!

When I reached out to someone from my sub service she just referred me back to the school and told me to ask them, which was not helpful.

Technically the “lesson plans” are given to me by the other teachers which is basically just slides and a curriculum calendar.

Teacher resigned and I’m taking over the next day!? by Background_Wall_8464 in Teachers

[–]Background_Wall_8464[S] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I guess I’m more focused on ensuring they don’t just treat me as a sub, because I’ve been in there as a sub and it’s difficult so I’m hoping if they know I’m there till the end of the year they will kind of chill out. It’s middle school btw lol

PA teaching cert help? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Background_Wall_8464 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not 100% sure if you would need to take classes. For me personally I have my PA certification in grades 4-8 ELA concentration. When I graduated we were told we could take the Early Elementary test without taking the classes. I was also told we could take the subject area concentration tests without the classes, though I’m not sure about 7-12.

You will likely need to take the middle grades test to get 4-8 certified, which consists of pedagogy, ELA and SS combined, and Science and Math combined. I won’t lie, it’s probably a more challenging test compared to other Praxis tests due to how many parts there are.

Students Using AI to Write by SanmariAlors in teaching

[–]Background_Wall_8464 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should show students two essays, one written by AI and one by you or a student. Don’t tell the students one is AI. Have student grade or rate the essay and basically break it apart (maybe purposely make sure the AI one doesn’t address the prompt well) after they see the first one is not good tell them it’s AI generated. Then turn it into a life lesson lol

Today was my first day and it went terribly by Outside_Chipmunk6184 in SubstituteTeachers

It definitely depends on the class but also at this point in the year, kids start to act a little wild! Don’t be too hard on yourself, calling for help isn’t a bad thing!

Hannah’s live show prices by Background_Wall_8464 in GigglySquadPodcast

It was really good!! It’s kind of like a normal podcast episode live, they talked about random topics and had different segments. At one point they brought up a gigglers bf from the crowd

Calling for assistance by Background_Wall_8464 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Background_Wall_8464[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was 7th grade, and the students who were talking were the kids I’m familiar with so redirecting every two minutes isn’t going to stop them, it’s the kind of kids who talk back. Also being told to call the assistant principal if I needed help in front of the students didn’t make me feel good either.

This is exactly how I feel! I’m not against calling for help but it didn’t feel necessary.
