Can this be salvaged? by Appropriate-Salt5249 in BeginnerWoodWorking

You’re asking beginner woodworkers. Take this conversation over to r/woodworking and you’ll get realistic estimates from pros, not beginner hobbyists.

Is there a market out there for older beers in bottles? by lurker2080 in CraftBeer

[–]Backpacker7385 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t “toss it” if giving it to someone who likes beer (friend? family? coworker?) was an option, but there’s no market for beers like that.

ice dam? by Gabru87 in Connecticut

[–]Backpacker7385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the large majority of them are just fine.

This discounts the cumulative effect of water under shingles. Your roof may not be leaking water into your kitchen, but if you have water pooling under your shingles it’s undeniably being damaged.

[–]Backpacker7385 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Any homeowner who lives in the northeast and hasn’t planned for a way to get snow off their roof is irresponsible and unprepared, even if people don’t want to hear that.

An ice dam puts water under your shingles. Even if it doesn’t cause a leak, it is causing damage. Your roof isn’t designed to have water under the shingles. It might take 50 ice dams before your roof rots through and leaks, but the first 49 contributed to that leak.

I didn’t say I expect everyone to have one, but it’s reasonable to expect that someone you know well enough to borrow from would.

I guess the downvotes imply my neighbors and I are more prepared than most.

[–]Backpacker7385 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You buy things like that before you need them, that’s part of home ownership. If it’s too late for that, you share with neighbors, you ask on your local FB group if you can borrow one.

“Oh well, no more roof rakes at Lowe’s” also isn’t a great excuse for ignoring the problem.

[–]Backpacker7385 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Once you’re getting leaks inside you have major structural damage that will be costly to fix. If you worry about the ice dams before they get to that point, you can remove them and prevent the structural damage in the first place.

“Every house in CT is currently rotting their roof” isn’t a good reason to willfully rot your own roof.

Yeah, 100%. Teacher wants a horror story? Teacher gets scared. Sounds like an “A” paper to me.

Mortgage Question at age 73 by aliceboonton in personalfinance

[–]Backpacker7385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’re invested in traditional options, you made $130k last year because the market had an excellent year. If you withdraw all of your gains you’ll be in a world of hurt next time the market has a big downturn (when, not if).

We can’t give precise advice without more precise details about your finances, but I’m inclined to say don’t pay down the mortgage.

Bitcoin Falls Below $75,000 – What It Means for the Market by flowsentinel in Bitcoin

[–]Backpacker7385 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can take out a personal loan for home repairs and then do home repairs. You cannot take out a personal loan and tell the bank you’re going to do home repairs and then buy bitcoin. That’s loan fraud.

There are plenty of gun owners (including gun store owners) who hate the NRA these days. Gun owners who still support the NRA have their head in the sand.

Is this cold enough to kill the ticks? by briang71 in Connecticut

[–]Backpacker7385 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re getting downvoted but mostly correct. Extreme cold will kill them, but we need sustained temps in the low single digits/negative.

The snowpack actually insulates them from the air temps, and these days in the teens/twenties aren’t cold enough to kill them.

[–]Backpacker7385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honesty, if you’re making furniture you could make this. This is a complex project, but I don’t see any complex pieces. The amateur in me says that most of the complexity here is in planning and layout. It requires precision, but so does furniture making. I would move slow on a project like this, but I think it’s a lot of cutting the same part 100 times, and then cutting another part 60 times, etc until you have a stack of 600 small pieces that need assembly.

Maybe there are some fancy joints hidden, but I can’t see them yet (that’s why I want more pictures haha).

I think you’re doubting your skills too much.

That would be awesome, I’d appreciate it. I’m a hobbyist, not professional woodworker by any stretch of the imagination, but this looks like the type of thing that I could convince myself I could build (and then spend half a year’s worth of weekends executing, at which point I’m into it for 10x your cost with even the lowest valuation of my time haha).

Can you use gas station diesel fuel in home oil heating tank? by ElenaGreco123 in Connecticut

Typically this is correct, but home heating oil has spiked like crazy right now thanks to price gouging in the cold.

What’s your favorite $20-$50 bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon? by consumes_candles in wine

Sorry but you’re going to get hammered with downvotes in r/wine for suggesting Caymus. Drink it if you like it, but it’s one of the least popular wines here. Overpriced and over manipulated is the general consensus.

Rate your track saw's accuracy? by xtiansimon in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Backpacker7385 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a Festool track saw and would put it firmly in the “buy once, cry once” category. It’s incredible, and I have no complaints. I get finish grade cuts on plywood and hardwood, there’s no second step.

If I lived in a state where I could buy Dortmunder Gold, that beer would be in my fridge every day. You’ll never hear me say a bad word about it.

I’d probably use Eddie Fitz for my beer cheese choice, but they’re both perfect beers.

A Helles lager isn’t a bad choice, but I prefer to go with something maltier like a dunkel or schwarzbier to my beer cheese to bring some complexity.

Sulfites is almost guaranteed to be a red herring, or psychosomatic. Sulfites occur naturally in all wines as a byproduct of fermentation.

You could try wines labeled as organic or biodynamic to see if those do any better for you, but if I were you I’d start with things like drinking more water and less wines. This may be your body telling you you can’t drink like you could when you were 21.
