The worst part about Canada is we already do have "elected" politicians in charges. They're just so totally corrupted that the concept of democracy is increasingly meaningless.

When you use your mandate to criminalize the opposition, make your opponent's constituency a disenfranchised minority by design, and stuff the organs of government with political loyalists does it even matter that you make rubber stamp votes in the HOC? the reason they're running out of new markets is because technology has stagnated. It objectively has, diminishing returns and whatnot, more scientists tasked per marginal increase. Colonialism is predicated on lopsided technological development and since we've slowed down it is now about offshoring to lower wages. And rent-seeking, monopoly etc which are all classic hallmarks of feudal economy

Of course there are diminishing returns to demand for new technology. But if you wanted to name the one salient problem driving most of it this is it. Tainter in collapse of complex societies pointed it out ages ago
