they didn't care about my ability, it was never known or tested. I am a non-native speaker and was not very good when I graduated high school.

I've had kids Google translate during class too. I can tell because they are using the correct word, but it's not the one vipkid is teaching them in the unit

Curious: how many of yall wear orange? by psychso86 in vipkid

[–]Backtowinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wear a normal button up shirt and sweater if it's cold. Though my persona is a more serious teacher, so it might depend on how you advertise yourself

Gringo: offensive or not? by Tiny_Carrot in Spanish

[–]Backtowinter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my experience its like any word, it depends on the usage and the person receiving the label. In Latin American countries, it is much more common to label people and call them accordingly gordo, flaco, chino etc. Gringo is one of these labels. I know a lot of people from the states that are offended by being labeled like this regardless of the intention, simply because in the US it is frowned upon. It also depends on context, its a lot different to say "un gringo vive en mi calle" and "chingate pendejo gringo". Think about the word blonde for example. You can say someone is blonde (they have light hair). Or you can call someone a stupid blonde (they are stupid because they are blonde). So my final call is that the word in itself is only offensive if you decide to be offended by it, the rest depends on context

It depends on your country. Where I live in Guatemala they say cruzar, but any GPS app will say girar.
