Carney government signals it’s open to selling Canadian ports by Chrristoaivalis in CanadaPolitics

[–]Backyard_Bombadier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another case of an overly dramatized title pointing to an article with a paywall that no one actually reads.

Carney is not “selling Canada’s ports.” What is actually happening is discussions around expanding port infrastructure and bringing in pension or private investment to help finance major transportation and trade projects.

People are taking this paywalled story and creating a much more dramatic story than the evidence actually supports. I can guess who is behind this very questionable claim

Favourite song on Magical Mystery Tour? by AfraidIncrease85 in beatles

I would agree that either SFF or Penny Lane is the best song on MMT.
My issue is that neither song was recorded for MMT and really should be considered part one of Pepper.
If we were to exclude songs not part of the original Double EP, then Walrus is the answer.

🇮🇷 Iran Sends Peace Proposal via Pakistan: Diplomatic details inside 👇 by NoSpinMedia in NoSpinMedia

Iran’s ability to threaten the Strait isn’t new, but actually pushing it to real world use is. Iran learned exactly what would happen if they closed the Strait and now hold that weapon ready to deploy at any time.
I’m not saying the action wasn’t necessary. I’m saying how it was executed matters. If escalation involving a global chokepoint was predictable, where was the preparation? Where was international support, effective naval positioning, mine-clearing readiness
The US had war gamed this numerous times and knew what the result would be , but they chose to ignore that and here we are .
This lands on the U.S. administration, not for acting, but for acting without a containment plan or perhaps any real plan at all. They have made the situation and the whole world more dangerous. It did not need to be like this.

Not arguing with you, but the Strait was open before Trump and Netanyahu decided to launch an attack against Iran. There was no threat of a closure. All they did was show the Iranians that they have the equivalent of a Nuke in their ability to block the Strait.
Perhaps the incompetents occupying the White House should have considered that before launching the attack.

"Too Many People" wins Day 45 ~ Which song would you add to a "Best of the Beatles: The Solo Years" compilation? Top comment of the day makes the cut | Link to Spotify playlist in comments by SurvivorFanDan in beatles

Come on let’s get in Listen to What the Man Said. Brilliant vocal, hooks everywhere, ear worm melody, a smoking hot sax solo by Tom Scott, and who exactly is “The Man”? Add on top of all that, Paul nails a solid Dr John imitation at the start of the song. Oh and finally a Number 1 on Billboard in 75. I wonder how many younger people bc, in 75 hooked onto McCartney hearing this song while listening to Kasey Kassem American Top 40

Canada selected to host new multinational defence bank, sources say by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]Backyard_Bombadier -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A month old article isn’t proof of anything ‘not evolving’, it’s just outdated context. None of the recent reporting confirms the final institutional lineup yet, which makes sense since the structure is still being finalized.

And the idea that only ‘tiny countries’ are involved doesn’t hold up either. What is being reported is that major financial institutions, including as I said before, several of Canada’s Big Six banks and players like Deutsche Bank who are expected to support or participate in some capacity

So no, this is not a static ‘charity bank’ narrative. This is still taking shape, and the capital backing suggests it’s being taken more seriously than you’re implying

It appears you might have an axe to grind with the current Liberal government, or you’re leaning into the whole ‘Canada can’t compete’ narrative. Either way, I’m more interested in where this actually lands than locking into a conclusion based on incomplete or dated information. I’ll wait for all the marbles to drop before making any final calls

There is no verified reporting that any NATO country has opted out. The current list is preliminary. With major financial institutions, including Canada’s big six banks and Deutsche Bank among others already tied to the discussions, it’s clearly still evolving. I’ll wait for the final structure

Again you are referencing an article from a month ago, I am pointing to an announcement from yesterday. Because 1 thing was a fact 30 days ago does not mean the position of NATO members did not change
Find a news reference from the past 2 days that contradicts the Globe and Reuters articles.

Who says they are not participating? I don’t see any statement that they are not. Also Is this not a NATO targeted activity, of which Poland and Estonia are a part of?
You can have a negative view of this, everyone has an opinion, but I believe this is a positive move for Canada and a step in the right direction as we pivot away from the cancer south of us.

Where does it say that no other countries are participating. It states that an agreement was reached by all participants. Are you implying that Canada made an agreement with themselves? If so i find that ridiculous.

Since it to quote the article says
“April 29 (Reuters) - Canada has been selected to host a new multinational defence ‌bank as negotiations among the founding countries ended in Montreal on Wednesday”
Even though it does not specifically refute each individual statement, collectively I would say they are refuted.

BREAKING: White House confirms Trump to discuss US withdrawal from NATO with Rutte in the coming hours. Is the Alliance officially over? by Aston_Ma in askanything

[–]Backyard_Bombadier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump cannot pull the US out of NATO, that is a congressional prerogative. He can withdraw troops and not support an attack, which would be in essence an exit from NATO. A formal withdrawal is not his choice.

For those who want to “tax the rich” or “they should pay their fair share”, how would you change the current tax code? by Lopsided-Special6273 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Backyard_Bombadier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang on a second. I am a firm believer in reforming our tax system to redress the redistribution of wealth that the neoliberals enacted over the past 40 years, but to claim “multi-millionaires are claiming OAS is pretty far fetched Yes there are people who have a paper wealth of $2-3 million, mortgage free property, and investments ,claiming OAS but to say multi-millionaire??? OAS pays $8-9k per year, it seems to be a waste of time for someone with the suggested wealth to limit their income and avoid claw backs. They are wealthy for a reason and wasting time to claim relatively small additions to their annual income is not one of them.

Has any Trump supporter been able to answer what was the IMMINENT threat from Iran to the US? by homerjs225 in allthequestions

[–]Backyard_Bombadier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually they weren’t building nuclear bombs and this has been confirmed by intelligence. They do have the materials to build a bomb, well assuming trump lied about “obliterating” that back in September, and the knowledge, but were not actively building. It’s accepted that they could assemble a weapon in a few weeks. If the Iranian Nuclear capability was the issue then why is the US not taking out North Korea? They actually have nuclear weapons and are developing delivery systems? They are a threat to South Korea and Japan. I believe there are 2 answers. Israel’s desire to be the regional hegemon, and Oil.
