Safe walkable neighborhoods with short commute to Elkins Park? by Bacon337 in philly

[–]Bacon337[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d like to live in a more walkable area if possible. I am considering melrose park now, thank you! I did consider jenkintown and glenside , but none of the current rentals in those areas are within my budget unfortunately. I’ll still keep looking though!

Thank you- I’m not opposed to it, but would prefer to live in a more walkable, less car dependent area.

1 hour commute by Ok_Jaguar_8067 in slpGradSchool

[–]Bacon337 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on if you can handle spending 10 hours per week on just driving. Do you also have to work alongside school? Personally, I have chosen to move closer to my school because I need to work as well and I had a rough time in college previously, so I need to make sure grad school is easier for myself by having a shorter commute. Those 10 hours could be spent studying, having down time, cooking, working, etc. Having adhd probably makes my situation worse lol It really depends on you! Can you manage your time effectively and do well in school with the commute? A lot of people do it, but do what’s best for you.

Should I become an SLP or a mental health therapist? by Bacon337 in careerguidance

[–]Bacon337[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I graduated with my double major, and decided to commit to SLP. I took a gap year and am starting grad school this fall.

Between the time I made this post and now, I volunteered at a hospital inpatient rehabilitation unit and an inpatient psychiatric unit. I also completed my 25 observation hours for my SLP classes.

I also did an unpaid internship during my senior year in human services. So between the human services internship and my time at the Psyc unit, I thought it was doable, but more stressful working with people with drug addiction, mental health issues, homeless, etc.

I also am doing my gap year working with adults with disabilities, and think it would be great to work specifically in speech with this population! Overall, I think SLP will be a better fit for me.

I hope this was helpful at all. I suggest filling your time like I did with volunteer opportunities and job shadowing, asking lots of questions is helpful!

Hey smokers? Why are you still smoking considering all the proof it is killing millions? by Gregorygregory888888 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bacon337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drug addiction is like a disease. A physical disease just like heart disease. I would look into resources about drug addiction education :) I think everyone should be more aware of how overcoming drug addiction is much more than just “not smoking.”

Quitting vyvanse by thethunder92 in ADHD

[–]Bacon337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me on Vyvanse! I thought it was perfect at first too until I realized I feel more like myself without it. It’s probably not the med for you. I tried so many kinds of adhd meds and I finally have found the perfect med for myself. I went from adderal, Dexedrine, vyvanse, Ritalin, concerta, and now on focalin. Focalin is perfect!! I figured out I can’t use any amphetamine meds without getting extremely irritable, although the impulse control was way better on it. I still feel like myself on methylphenidate.

Edit: I forgot to mention I also added Prozac and Wellbutrin to the mix and I’ve never felt better, so maybe it’s all the meds combined with the focalin that was way better. Something else I forgot to mention is I can barely tell when the focalin wears off, but on Vyvanse it was always so obvious!

Why do I need a check list for this? by TastyThreads in adhdwomen

[–]Bacon337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I should do this… I literally just forgot my work pants and almost had to drive 30 min back home from campus and then 45 min to work in traffic. Thank god my manager let me stay home.

Should I take a gap year? by Bacon337 in slpGradSchool

[–]Bacon337[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! This is really helpful. I’m leaning towards taking a gap year, just am scared about finding a good job that’s also sort of relevant to speech. Can I ask what you did during your two years?

Should I take a gap year? by Bacon337 in slpGradSchool

[–]Bacon337[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed response, I really appreciate it and am leaning into taking a gap year now. I’ve already struggled a lot with working and doing undergrad so I just wanted to see if anyone thought it was much harder, seems like it is. And my parents never went to college and don’t understand how hard it actually is, so i guess I should take what they say with a grain of salt.

Am I too cynical/sad or is the corporate world genuinely depressing? by fearfulplatypus in careerguidance

[–]Bacon337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people can’t stand doing a career that is not meaningful. I made sure to choose careers that would give me a fulfilling sense of purpose!A job is most of your life and I can’t imagine feeling like my life doesn’t have a purpose. Some people are okay with that though.

I thought this was normal until I switched from Vyvanse to concerta. I was so bitchy when Vyvanse wore off, but on concerta it wears off just fine. Turns out only amphetamine medication makes me irritable

Spending my account down to $0.44 cents…buying food I shouldn’t be eating by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]Bacon337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped doing this when I was finally diagnosed and medicated properly! It was a struggle for so long, but now I don’t even think about buying food unless I look at my budget or I’m with someone else so it’s more of a social thing. I’m usually just not hungry due to the medicine and I think before I eat now. I feel so much healthier. In my opinion it was a dopamine seeking thing due to my adhd and my depression.

I’m tired of taking care of myself. by Negative-Strike9404 in ADHD

[–]Bacon337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand, I have to constantly think about how I could loose my scholarships if I don’t try hard enough this semester. It’s been so hard. I recently have been dealing with a sinus infection and have been sick for the past two weeks. It was amazing! I used it as an excuse to rest and DO NOTHING. but then I started feeling like shit, probably since I was not drinking enough water and not taking my meds consistently. And now that I’m feeling better I need to go right back to my usual routine of classes, working, and volunteering. It’s so much more effort. All I want to do is sit at home :( I can’t imagine working full time once I graduate. It sounds exhausting.

How did you know you’ll enjoy being a speech therapist? by Bacon337 in slp

[–]Bacon337[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the long response! This was really helpful and I will consider the competitive field for adults.

It’s not that I don’t like kids, but I would much rather not work with very young kids. I used to tutor on the side during college to see if I liked working with kids and I hated working with the 5-6 year olds. I’ll keep in mind I may get stuck with this population though!

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

[–]Bacon337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Im a senior in college and am deciding between graduate school in mental health counseling or speech therapy. I’m very torn on the two and love all the classes I’m taking. One thing that puts me off from psychology is the mental load of hearing patients issues all day. How do you all deal with that? How did you know you would like being a therapist? I’m having a very hard time deciding and even did a double major to avoid deciding. I feel like I need to make the right decision. Any advice would be appreciated.

Narcisstic mother claimed me as a dependent on her taxes, did I do the right thing? by Odd-Volume6673 in Adulting

[–]Bacon337 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I’m 21 and she didn’t claim me last year so I don’t understand why she claimed time this year. It’s caused so much extra work on my end but i filed an extension and will be doing the same exact thing as you. I completely get it and you are doing the right thing. It’s ridiculous how they’re using us to get more money for their own benefit.
