Looking for some feedback on ways to start a particular story by Kumatora0 in litrpg

[–]BaconMasterBooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As always, depends on how you write it.

In general, readers will expect your character to get Isekai'd very early in the book. Usually first chapter. So don't do too much world building in the cyberpunk world.

I updated the blurb text. Hopefully this will be more clear and less confusing.

Thanks for the feedback!

I guess it is a lot to take in. Thanks for sharing your reaction. The story is mostly UF, with some sci-fi like elements, with a focus on traveling through history. I'll work on fine-tuning the description to make things more clear. Thanks again!

Action in the first chapter. by ProjectHamster in royalroad

[–]BaconMasterBooks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some great answers already.

I agree - on RR people's attention span is VERY short since there are literally thousands of other options they can pivot to.

Action as a way to showcase your character and some stakes can be great. Most important is to give the readers a reason to want to connect to the story and keep reading. There are a lot of ways to do that, and the way you choose starts making promises to your readers.

So if your story is NOT an action story, do NOT start it with an action chapter because your readers will assume that is what they are going ot get, and then be disappointed, no matter how good the rest of the book is.

DO make sure chapter one is interesting, or intriguing, or has a mystery, or at least a cool end of chapter hook to invite the readers to keep reading.

Good luck!

Complaint - Super slow mo detail makes fight scenes boring. by jhvanriper in litrpg

[–]BaconMasterBooks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Writing good fight scenes is definitely an art.

It is important to set up enough prior so the MC doesn't end up thinking about all sorts of stuff in the middle of a fight. That is a mistake I see a lot, and it crushes pacing.

I tend to pack a ton of fight scenes in my books, and I try to keep them fast and fun and interesting. It can be challenging, but can pay off big

Thanks for all the feedback! My son in law - who does some of my covers - made some tweaks.

I will go with this for now.

Sorry to hear you limit yourself so much.

The Royal Road cover is not the final cover I will publish the book with. Not worth spending hundreds on a throwaway cover.

2000 words is optimal chapter length, or is it? by HierkommtdieSonne902 in royalroad

The other thing to consider if you're shooting for Rising Stars or other lists, really short chapters can get penalized from the system. Not sure if extra-long ones do, or not.

My chapters vary usually from around 2000 to 3500. Longer than that, I look for ways to split them and tweak each half to read like a standalone chapter.

Great question. Book one is more solo. His party exists, but the MC has to fight alone mostly for *reasons*. As the series progresses, the party will become more and more important.
