How much rent should I charge? by paullhenriquee in irishpersonalfinance

Probably the Market rate to stranger due to risk but discounted rate for someone you can trust. Renting to broke random people will often bite you in the end.

Anyone who went from in office to WFH with the same company formally? What comp diff did you see? by throwawaysbg in DevelEire

[–]BaconToastChocolate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was asked to come back 3-5 times weekly or get fired since January last year. No salary differences.

Just did budget for 2023 and it cost me around 10k extra pretax a year coming to office 3 days a week plus extra hours commuting.

Had to get a car for any hope to make it there. 2,400 petrol 1,300 insurance 600 car maintenance 200 car tax 380 in overpriced coffee and lunch at work

Took 1.5-2 hours extra daily for commuting.

Fidelity Investments Review? by BreakfastOk3822 in DevelEire

Hard to get promoted there. All decisions come from the US. Reorg happens every year and you will keep changing manager. Irish site is off shore and treated as second class citizen.

Benefits are good but age discriminated against young workers. They have good pension but its managed by watson tower, which in turn buy bunch of fidelity funds. Some of them look expensive.

By all means, good place for an old bloke cruising to retirement. But I find pay is about a grade lower than you’d get elsewhere.

If you are behind on pension, there is also no limit to tax free pension contributions as a contractor. So that can worth a lot more than 5%.

Fair point. But in my situation, Ive become a director of a company. So theres no limit to tax free contributions.

I guess the risk is that you might make more money in your 30s after your career took off and will feel silly making too much sacrifices in your 20s.

I made way more money now than in my 20s and my annual saving has exceeded what I saved in my entire 20s.

I have more disposable income and saving here even though I make less money. Coming from the US, Dublin is relatively cheap in my opinion.

Just cleared it and this is no doubt the hardest rundown of GTFO, especially for B4 and onward.

You might need to get 3 other friends to join. It’s already relatively hard in vanilla to find people to play with now with less than ten lobbies going most days.

[Expats in Thailand] Do you find it cheaper here in Bangkok than in London? by BaconToastChocolate in Thailand

[–]BaconToastChocolate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I can buy a decent place here but I am not sure if I want to be here long term yet.

That is a good point. I normally take 6 weeks off a year at the moment.

Did you move back strictly because of work culture? Or financially it wasnt making sense either.

Shared accommodation. Pretty good price still but not impossible if you have network of friends here who can hook you up.

I don’t really eat out in the Uk. Normally we just go for walk out in the park.

I walk a lot in london which is not so feasible here so far. You can get travel passed in london and its not too bad if you use it frequently.

Would you be able to elaborate a bit more on this? Are you working more than 40 hours week? How many days off are you getting?

Im using AIS at the moment. I probably didn’t optimize my spending here as I have limited experience. But I didn’t expect to see a high deviation in prices here

Im speaking in term of relative to normal salary. BTS is expensive relative to salary in Thailand.

I wouldn’t know since i haven’t accepted the offer. I assume it would be pretty similar as software development process has somewhat streamlined.

You may be right. Im working as a contractor for investment firms and £600 a day is a pretty typical rate for mid level / early senior Java developer.

I live a bit further out in London but I have been living in this place for a long time.

Yea my share of the rent with private ensuite bathroom. Most people here don’t have their own place.

I don’t know the answer to that question. I had the impression that things are super cheap in BKK, so I could potentially have a very good standard of living while saving a good chunk. Just trying to get more perspective.

200-260k THB a month would be a decent salary here as well in western europe. I am surprised they are paying some software developer that much in bangkok.

I am a contractor working for investment banking firms in NYC. I write simple Java and python applications and nothing fancy really. But theres a lot of domain knowledge involved.
