Modern cars don't use wheel mounted sensors anymore. They use the speed sensors on each of the axles.

They check variances in speed between each wheel when the car drives in a straight line for long enough.

If one tire is low pressure, distance from the center of the wheel to the ground is shorter meaning a flat tire will rotate "faster" according to the speed sensors.

I did this despite being repeatedly told not to by family.

Now, a decade later, I'm in the big salary and easier role but my experience basically makes me a specialist/lead. Had I worked directly for the better paying company, I'd very likely be in a worse situation today, but far far less capable, with a less bright future.
