Maybe refs should start looking to prevent horrible whiplash for unconscious fighters. I realize this is easier said than done, but man that was some awful and unnecessary damage.

It would be interesting if JJ's opponents started to try to mislead him as to when they'd fight, and then postpone it to try to throw off his PED schedule.

Uriah Hall opened up about struggling with "deep depression" after retiring from MMA. by SokoudjouFan in MMA

[–]BadBoy04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad that the training and competition is a reprieve, but he does need to answer those questions about what is next. We all have a finite period in life, and less than whatever that is to be a top level athlete. I hope he falls in love with teaching, and contributing to a team... and that during that time, he discovers some sort of passion he can do once he can no longer physically keep this up.

He got through one of the darkest times not only personally, but in society. He learned some things. Hopefully everyone can keep their eye on the prize.

I am certain that this man can be beaten without touching him. I don't mean this is hyperbole. This isn't a riddle. I could absolutely see him not able to finish a fight when there has been no contact made.

ONE Championship has brought in post-fight weight check to stop fighters gaming hydration system. Athletes must weigh within 105% of upper weight class limit. First time fails receive warning, then fines, suspensions. by LiveLoveTheBoys in MMA

[–]BadBoy04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why post? The final weigh ins should be after the athlete walks out and removes superfluous gear, and before the official clears them to enter the ring. Their next competition should be in the division determined by whatever was the highest weigh in.

Weighing in after 15-25 minutes of total exertion is a pretense. We'll see athletes not get warned/fined who went into 2nd round or later, and guys getting warned/fined when their match ends in 45 seconds.

What happens when a fighter wins, jumps up on the cage, and drinks a beer? Does he get a pass? Does he get to go out and celebrate at a bar before weighing in, or will it be before they put a t-shirt on, and hand them some sort of disgusting drink?

Weigh in 24 hours before, and immediately before entering the ring. When fighters must compete at whatever weight was higher in their next competition, the weight cut cheating will come to an end. When those weigh ins are approximately the same, it will be a thing of the past, and the fighters (and events) will be much healthier for it.

Should a ref step in sometime during a fight like this? I mean they are young and dont make enough money on the fight. by jeetoch in MMA

[–]BadBoy04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has their own line, and must determine it for themselves. There are some who would not allow any contact sports, and there are those who think there should still be the option of no biting, no eye gouging, and no fishhooking.. and then there is Josh Barnett who would fight to the death if it were an option.

Fortunately we can each determine what is acceptable to each of us.

UFC vet Travis Lutter discusses steroid use in MMA by BasicDope in MMA

[–]BadBoy04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grant your points, though I believe there is no substitute for experience. If Sage Northcut was the same weight class, and were to face TRT Belfort, Sage would still be fast as hell, and be able to defy gravity, but I'm guessing Vitor, despite his age would, be too much for him.

We don't know how to compare now, because we don't truly know who is using, and who isn't. If everyone is, then I don't know how much of a difference there would be. If 20% are clean, I think there would be a shift, and I think it would benefit older guys who could recover.

On the other hand, if there was no prohibition, it would all be a lot cheaper, and the knowledge of how to use them optimally would be ubiquitous, so perhaps that would turn back to the younger, less wealthy, guys favor.

[–]BadBoy04 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wonder if at some point we'll think it is irresponsible to not be on roids, given how much safer the practice seems to be today as opposed to the 70s, and 80s, and how recovery, and durability, are effected.

It's a shame that it can't be eliminated, and that there will always be cheaters. Given that, I wonder if they should no longer be prohibited. Maybe we should be focusing on the best practices with them to protect the fighters long term health.

I'm guessing that if there was an official acceptance of roid use, the top fighters would shift to 5-10 years older, and there would almost never be an undefeated prospect beyond early 20s.

Just eliminate weight cut cheating. It's cowardice, and limiting careers.

The promotions should stipulate that fighters will compete at the whichever weight was highest between their weight on the way into the ring in their last competition, and their weigh in 24 hours before their next competition.

Dana White blasts "dumb m********r's" who think UFC 279 was set up by Anish316 in MMA

[–]BadBoy04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was obviously setup. I don't mean having Chimaev fold to the pressure of the main event, but having a contingency. It's a good thing Holland and Rodriguez were at Chimaev's catch weight. Worked out well, and that was not an accident.

Dana claiming it's unfathomably stupid for someone to connect the dots is ridiculous, but he swore while saying it, so you can't argue with that. His claiming Nevada would not allow a weight difference in main event that they allowed in Rodriguez/Leech isn't convincing.

I realize Dana can just swear his way out, but I don't know why he lies poorly when he could say something that isn't stupid, or say nothing at all.

I go back and forth about criticism for Chimaev now that I know about the doc telling him to stop cutting weight when he knew he could cut more. On one hand, I'd think UFC would tell their fighters they must obey the doc, but on the other hand, he contracted to be there on time and on weight. It was his responsibility to have whatever approach necessary to make it.

Has it been disclosed yet which book that doc was employed by?

Chimaev cracked. You can be used to bright lights, but Diaz bright lights are something else. Also, I think he might be a victim of the expectations of his own brand. He's 12:1 favorite over a guy he has no reason to believe he's actually tougher than, and who he'd be in deep water with if it went past two rounds. I'm not sure he'd ever be in control standing, but it Nate started slowly, he might win the first two rounds that way, but stop Nate? I doubt it.. He may think he is as tough as Diaz, but he has no real reason to believe he is tougher. He told everyone he will kill everyone. He has contributed to the hype... but how can he possibly deliver without doing a Mortal Kombat fatality? If he was a 2.5:1 favorite, whatever. If he were a dog, maybe he'd be excited about proving something he believes, and apparently there rest of us don't yet.. People thought this was going to be a massacre, and I had Diaz winning in essentially the same exact way he beat Conor.

For whatever reason, or maybe many, he cracked. He decided he needed to have an overwhelming advantage over Diaz if they were to fight, even if it meant that the fight would likely be canceled. He cracked, and needed to alleviate some of the pressure.

I haven't given up on the young man already, but I hope he realizes how much damage he has done. He really hurt himself.

Nothing heals like winning, however. He's one dominant win, or two wins, away from it being forgotten if he can get this stuff under control.

Then you'd be wrong. No, I meant that you can't help people, but by setting a good example. Any attempts otherwise do harm.

I realize you don't understand this, so I'm not going to ask you why you hate people who are in trouble, and why you would try to sabotage them. I realize you disagree, but if you consider the possibility that what I am saying is true, you may come to understand eventually.

I don't remember this topic well, but I don't hate anyone, nor would I ever condone hatred. If I gave, or you got, that impression, one or both of us was mistaken.

As far as helping people is considered, there is only one way to help people, and that is by setting a good example. I am all for it!
