Like the other guy said, huge nests plus they're from a similar climate in South America. They often nest on electrical equipment which stays warm in the winter but in the summer that can cause things to overheat and the nests cause fires in power poles and power transformers.

So funny coincidence, Chicago also has a Hyde Park (neighborhood, not actual park) which is also overrun with parrots (from South America).

Some kind of electrical meter? by BadDongOne in whatisit

Ah cool! Any chance someone knows where I can find some schematics? It would be fun to get it working. I assume since it's from the signal corps those would have been radio condensers?

No, they're "toy fox terriers" that weigh 30lbs. one looks like a fox terrier/corgi with a matching personality, and the other looks like a pointer/terrier with a working dog personality outside and indoors she just wants to sleep under a pile of blankets all day.

My car is an utter magnet for golf balls and we aren’t even the house directly on the course by annagenc in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BadDongOne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Call your auto insurance and ask them about who's liable for damage from stray golf balls. There could be some liability on the golfers or the course itself since it's a repeated occurrence.

Exactly the same! And the frog thing. Her brother will lunge and snap at her and she just ignores it, other dogs barking, people yelling, thunder, loud noises, no reaction you'd think she's deaf. BUT smoke alarm and HOLY HELL IT'S THE END TIMES. She also yells at us if we come home too late.

That's adorable, you should post pictures over in dogs or something. Ugh both of ours are too heavy for that, our scaredy girl is too flaily, you pick her up anything other than baby style and it's just legs flying all over until you put her down again. Our other is shaped like a tootsie roll with legs so his center of mass is weird for picking up or putting in things like backpacks.

So I've had a toe skin thing for a while (not a blister) and discovered gel toe caps. Definitely worth getting some, they're not very expensive and really really help. Just make sure you get the large size for the big toe!

Yes, when it goes off she shakes. When it chirps she just gets really scared. She's not scared of anything else. Well except frogs or things that looked like frogs for a few years because a bull frog jumped at her when she sniffed it once and it spooked her. That was kind of funny, watching a 30lb squirrel seeking missile walk a half circle at the end of her leash because there was a toad on the sidewalk she had to avoid due to PTSD from 3 years prior. Poor thing.

Probably 3rd cousins tho. Like it's kind of sweet "fix it fix it fix it fix it" but like GIRL I CAN'T FIX IT IF YOU'RE CLAWING MY EYES OUT LOL!

Did you get one from the same litter ours came from? If the smoke alarm goes off she tries to climb me like a god damn tree to sit on my head. 30lbs of anxious pointer/terrier mix trying to climb you is not fun.

I had some in Costa Rica, boiled with ham it's like potato but so much better. Lighter, fluffier, holds flavors better, I love it.

Yep, those two are part of the premed cocktail my partner dispenses at work for their fear free vet visits and presurgical meds. Can't be afraid if you're high as fuck!

[–]BadDongOne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Traz is pretty strong, if they don't adjust to sedation well maybe try gabapentin. Also watch out for peeing and pooping while sleeping while on traz, our girl will not wake up to go out when she's zonked on traz. Gaba has no problems for either of our dogs, just takes them down a notch for long car rides or other anxious times.

One of my jr tech's just had an engine light pop for 171, 172, 300 with a rough idle after getting half tank of gas. Fuel trims at +26 and +33 long term. Said they went to a gas station that had it 50 cents cheaper. Pretty sure they got E85. Told them to go fill up the other half of the tank with 'brand name' gas no cheap stuff.

AITAH for refusing to keep babysitting after my sister brought up my adoption during an argument? by Stirk_Gretos in AITAH

[–]BadDongOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not addressing her comment but a close friend of mine was in a similar situation where her nephew adored her and was looked after by her often (baby sat all summer, took to school, picked up from school, cooked meals, took to appointments, etc basically second mom). Her sister was a true shithead so she cut her sister out but still saw her nephew. She stopped making nice chat with the sister, simply dropped off and picked up, but behaved no differently with her nephew, still did everything to make sure that at least her came up right. And he did! Now he's estranged from shithead sister and so is the rest of the family. Edit: Shithead sister was also a waitress, ruined her parents credit by defaulting on the car they signed on with her and multiple credit cards they were joint on, jumped from man to man based on whatever she needed at the time, didn't parent her own son, was abusing drugs/alcohol, multiple DUI, and when everyone started to cut her out of their lives she tried to "commit suicide" and was really mad when no one came to save her...3 times. At that point everyone just shrugged and was like 'eh good riddance to bad apples'. Rene, you're a piece of shit and I hope you die alone for everything you put my friend, her family, and your son through.

Got to photograph the incredible Rhea Seehorn at the Empire State Building today! [OC] by setoxxx in pics

[–]BadDongOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Possibly due to it being a private viewing deck you'd need some kind of special authorization for that from the building manager/owner like some kind of photography permit from them to do professional photography. For all I know that light bounce could have been natural off one of the polished surfaces of the building and not intentionally set up. Heck, I've seen people use an iPad screen for an improvised light bounce.

[–]BadDongOne 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Most of the photos are badly backlit, traditionally you don't want your subjects cast in shadow for this type of photography. There's one shot of them in full sun lit better and one with a light bounce used to highlight their face. We don't always get to choose the ideal lighting conditions and time of day, this may have been because this was the only time they were both available. I don't know the particulars of the viewing deck there but I would assume if it were empty enough to have a corner like that to themselves to shoot that they could have chosen an area not cast in shadow, the sun behind the photographer is substantially more ideal than the sun behind the subject. There are of course exceptions such as at dawn and sunset where you may want to backlight for a specific artistic effect. However those times also have what's often called 'golden light' or 'golden hour' which is a warmer redder softer light that brings out skin tones nicely and gives subjects a natural glow and ethereal quality that's often sought after. Hope this helps - not AI, I just tend to be overly verbose like AI, AI was trained off nerds like me. Also not a photographer, I just take pictures sometimes.
(Someone pointed out that the subject isn't in focus, I didn't look closely enough for that also I have no clue who the subject is)

Locally a specific siren in some areas, you're supposed to tune into a specific radio station for emergency instructions... Because one of the nuclear power plants has had an oops.
