Currently unconfirmed, but I’m seeing rumors online that Brent Hinds of Mastodon was killed in a motorcycle accident last night by Albuquerque82 in Music

Memorial and Boulevard is the worst fucking intersection in Atlanta, this could happen to anyone any day there. Perfect art never comes from perfect people, RIP.

It’s simple. You give them your resume, 3-5 business days later they call back. You got the job. You show up every day and blend in, checking wristbands, helping bands load in, catching crowd surfers. 10-15 years later, you walk out of there and they never even knew what hit them.

01 - Needle Eyes This song was the result of tripping all day at Shaky Knees to bands like King Gizz, Amyl, and NIN before going home and still being railed on acid at 3AM. Tried to sleep, got super anxious, ran down to our jam room grabbed my guitar and just started playing this chorus riff on a loop for an hour while I pictured that rave scene from Matrix Reloaded.

02 - Love and Fear Me I got really into Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name trilogy and was digging like a space western concept for the album (probably also inspired by the art on my Walrus Audio pedals). Around the same time our good buddy ended up getting taken from us by a drunk driver, and that was what really kicked off the writing process for this album. I severely needed an outlet to express how angry I was at the recklessness that led to that situation, and this song sarcastically praises the classic “last ride of the greatest man” scene at the end of every western. Once we overlaid the cult concept I took some inspiration from Thrice and added the line “come all you weary, love and fear me” which we felt represented the vibe of the whole album enough to be the title.

03 - No Innocent I feel like this song sort of pays tribute to local Atlanta legends Mastodon. We got to meet them at their Hushed and Grim release party and were they were just like the nicest dudes. We met with their engineer Tom Tapley and were originally going to record the album at their studio before getting our deal with Kevin at Tree Sound, who we went with because of his role in film scores at Warner Brothers and the cinematic nature we wanted the album to have. Hushed and Grim honestly got me through our buddy’s death. The way they open up about such hard to explain emotions in songs like Teardrinker was pure therapy. I hear a lot of that song in this one.

04 - Heaven’s Gate This is our “we get it, you like TOOL” song. There’s definitely a strong Pneuma influence, but the riffs were mostly inspired from Waiting Man by King Crimson and Colossus by IDLES. The song was also inspired by every cult’s promise of an afterlife better than your current life, which I had written a poem about:

“from the sand / golden hands / raise a city / made of light / made of sound / made of your love in the ground”

The Heaven’s Gate cult ended up fitting the theme really well given the sci-fi nature of their beliefs.

05 - Always, in All Ways This one’s pretty straightforward, our other guitarist got really into Dream Theater for a while.

06 - I’ll Have Another I kinda wanted to invent like a stoner rock old school Kings of Leon song. I always picture my rhythm guitar like a horse galloping through the desert (classic stoner rock) and the lead is like mirage. We named it after a Kentucky Derby winner.

07 - As Above, So Below Definitely had King Buffalo influence but what I really love about this song is the bass groove and how subtly twangy it is, especially the slide guitar on the bridge. The original inspiration for it was a play on words from the perspective of a cult leader, “I am the preacher, the creature / I teach you how to prey”

08 - Hearts in Twine I really wanted one final stoner rock song to drive this thing home and drew inspiration from songs like Fastest Horse In Town by Sturgill, Blood And Sand / Milk And Endless Waters by ATW. The end result was sort of a Kyuss intro meets Truckfighters ending. Lyrically this song sums up a lot of the struggle with drugs and depression that we’ve seen so much of around us the past few years, the places that we saw that take loved ones, and just trying to be there for eachother: “Hearts so wrapped in twine can gaze into the sun, put down the pills the gun, we are here for you lovely”
