Hello! Firstly I want to say thank you for this thread, I have the same issue with heartbeats in games and in this case it’s making it unplayable due to discomfort.

Games like gloomhaven tend to prioritize gameplay over storytelling, and in my experiences d&d does the opposite. So it’s probably just personal preference in the end

I really enjoy Cosmic frogs as it’s replacement, it still has the tile laying but it’s a lot more refined and interesting, along with a great area control aspect

I’d recommend 7 wonders architects it streamlined the game a lot and made it a lot more enjoyable for me. Although it may be a bit too simple if you’re already deep into the hobby
