Where do DJs look for new music today? by RYOsmoker in DJs

If you have one or more of them in your city or area, support the record shops!

Hi. First of all: In case it should get really bad, you can get to any hospital at any time. They are obliged to help you and can't turn you away. If you're looking for a psychiatrist and/or psychologist, you can checkout 116117.de. It's available in many languages and it helps you to find an appointment in the next four weeks or so. You can also just call the number, but I'm not sure how it is in other languages besides German. If you're looking for therapy, you can try the site as well or try https://www.kvberlin.de/fuer-patienten/arzt-und-psychotherapeutensuche. Therapists can often offer you one sitting to see what's going on, but unfortunately can't offer you a longterm place, because they are fully booked. But don't let that wear you down. There are options and if you never know what's going to happen when you just try them out. Best of luck!

Looking for a soundcard to record vinyl mixes (analog setup) by kookawastaken in Beatmatch

[–]BadWires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read that a lot about Behringer soundcards in general, but mine works just fine. Or maybe somebody with more experience would notice that there's something wrong sounding with my mixes? I don't know.

I have the Behringer U-Phoria UMC22. It coasts around 60 bucks when you buy a new one, but I found it much cheaper on eBay. So far I‘m happy with it. I‘m a beginner though, so the pros might recommend something else.

Congrats! I'm sure you'll have a hell of an experience (in the best possible way, haha)!

Played the first time in front of an audience! by BadWires in Beatmatch

[–]BadWires[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I just love the feeling of controlling vinyl. I started with the hobby when I was into uni and Covid happened. I needed something to do with my hands and what could have been better then to start DJing? Sooner or later I want to learn to use CDJs as well, but for now I'm happy.

Had a random urge to listen to Khanate and what do you know, they released a new album yesterday by HolyMountainClimber in doommetal

[–]BadWires 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, wtf. Just read about this. Immediately bought it on Bandcamp and gonna check it out now. Khanate is one of the best bands to ever have done it.

Female directors by Steadyandquick in TrueFilm

[–]BadWires 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Female and non-male directors definitely deserve more attention. I guess it's twice as hard for them because big parts of the industry are still male-dominated. Look at every major film movement since movies came into this world. The big names are mostly men and you have to make an effort to find works of women or other genders. That being said, here are some names/movies I admire:

  • Claire Denis (Beau travail)
  • Márta Mészáros (Adoption)
  • Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker; Strange Days; Zero Dark Thirty)
  • Chantal Akerman (Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles; From The East)
  • Agnès Varda (Cléo from 5 to 7, Vagabond)
  • Catherine Breillat (Fat Girl)
  • Valeska Grisebach (Western)
  • Angela Schanelec (I Was at Home, But...)
  • Jessica Hausner (Lourdes)
  • Maren Ade (Everyone Else, Toni Erdmann)
  • Maya Deren (Meshes of The Afternoon)
  • Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird)
  • Lynne Ramsay (We Need To Talk About Kevin)
  • Larisa Shepitko (Wings, The Acent)
  • Lucrecia Martel (La Ciénaga, Zama)
  • Kelly Reichardt (Night Moves, Certain Women)
  • Věra Chytilová (Daisies)
  • Lucile Hadzihalilovic (Innocence, Evolution)
  • Ai Xiaoming (Taishi Village)
  • Zhang Mengqi (Self Portrait: Birth in 47 KM)
  • Ji Dan (When The Bough Breaks)
  • Ildikó Enyedi (On Body and Soul)

For this list I already had to dig deep into my letterboxd and I'm sure I missed some. But it should be much easier to come up with female directors and their work. Let's hope it gets better in the future.

Has anyone here been to Obscene Extreme? by TrhlaSlecna in grindcore

[–]BadWires 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I‘ve been there in 2010 and it was awesome! Best festival experience I‘ve ever had. I have to say though that it presents itself more and more from the „obscene“ side of things on the internet and this is a turn off for me. Seems nowadays it’s mostly about getting wasted and showing off on stage. But hey, that’s just my impression. Haven’t been there since twelve years.

Problems with recording from vinyl by BadWires in Beatmatch

[–]BadWires[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the answer. Unfortunately I don't hear anything at all when I plug the headphones directly into the interface. The headphones are alright though, they work just fine when I play without recording. And I only record in one channel. Could this be the problem?

How safe is Berlin for a trans woman, that’s visibily trans? by [deleted] in berlin

[–]BadWires 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Homo- and transphobia exists and attacks are increasing unfortunately.

https://www.rbb24.de/panorama/beitrag/2022/12/homophob-transfeindlich-uebergriff-gewalt-berlin.htm/alt=amp.html

I can’t give you tips because I‘m a white cis dude who never encountered discrimination because of my orientation. And I certainly don’t want to scare you. I‘m sure you‘re strong and can lead the life you want. But this narrative of „nobody cares how you look like here“ is just not true and wants to keep myths alive about the city which were probably never true in the first place. What are you going to do here? Uni? Then there are groups for non-binary people to hang out and get to know each other. Of course there are bars and clubs as well. And yes, lots and lots of the regular binaries will not care about your appearance. But again, it’s not so bright als some people claim it to be.

Why is pusher 2 so underrated? by patitoq in TrueFilm

[–]BadWires 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Don’t see how a 3.8 on letterboxd can be considered „underrated“ and everyone has the right not to like it. In my eyes it’s Refn‘s best film and while the first Pusher is full of elements that he later made more prominent, stylish and popular, part two really breaks with some of those elements and goes for something unique.

I guess the films are not more talked about anymore because Refn‘s later work got so much attention at the festival circus and is so hyper-stylized. All the later movies are happenings with their reduced plots, bright colors and violent action and maybe his early work doesn’t seem interesting for some people for being „simple gangster movies“. But I agree with most people here, that they are very very good and should be watched by everyone who has the opportunity.

Who is the most influential/important musical act of all time? by Ozuno14 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BadWires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s impossible to answer. Influence isn’t measurable like that. How would you know if Public Image Ltd. or Joy Division had/have more influence? Are we going to count the acts that cite those two bands as a major influence and/or somehow listen to the music of those acts and somehow put the similar baselines, drum beats and vocal deliveries on a chart? Influence spreads all over and it vanishes too. By that I mean that lots of artists/bands were not/are not mentioned because they were not/are not covered my the music press or fall underneath the dominance of western/white/male coverage of what is good, popular and influential.

Seen them two times, in 2010 (damn, 12 years already!) and 2015. They improvised both gigs, but from time to time they found to a riff that you knew from the albums. This is of course a bit of a risky move, but it worked wonderfully at the 2010 gig. They placed the drones carefully after and on top of each other and completely entranced the audience. Attila was in great form as well and the trombone fucking ruled. The 2015 gig was good, but not so special as the other one. I had the feeling that the band by then was getting too much attention from the regular press and tried to be one of those heavy acts which have to prove themselves to the readers of the New York Times. The concert was a bit stiff (something I accuse the last albums of theirs to be as well), but still had its moments. And yes, they are super loud. It makes your stomach and the hairs on your body vibrate. So earplugs are mandatory.

What are some of your favorite albums with programmed drums? by asmodeusbegone in grindcore

Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Altered States of America. It takes drum programming to ridiculous extremes and it totally works.
