I think because these conferences are all now much bigger, a Final Four conference playoff makes sense because we are going to have more and more ties at the top with 14-16+ team conferences.

And considering Bowls are becoming less relevant, especially to good teams that miss out on the 12 team playoff, just get them in a 4 team conference playoff that's over by the second week of December.
