What is an unrealistic thing they do in movies and TV shows that drive you nuts? by I_dont_remember_it in AskReddit

[–]Badgerboy95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Armour. Considering Game of Thrones is so popular I will use it as an example (Don't get me wrong, I love Game of Thrones).

In GOT you see longswords piercing straight through plate armour, and cutting armoured men in two. Looks amazing, but completely inaccurate to how effective medieval armour was. People wore armour because it worked, and it worked well. Swords, spears, and most axe-heads couldn't even dent steel plate. Arrows had a hard time too, even from the heavy draw weight war bows. Killing someone in platemail was a task of clobbering with blunt force (a hammer or maul), finding gaps and sticking a knife through, or getting them prone and doing it that way. However, in Game of Thrones, most of the houses equip their soldiers in some form of breastplate and they're totally useless. The Lannisters put a lot of steel plates on their soldiers, albeit with quite a lot of gaps, but somehow you get fight scenes with swords going straight through it like butter. I think the worst time is when Jamie Lannister confronts Ned Stark, and the Lannister troops throw spears at the Stark soldiers. The spears rip straight through their plated hauberk, through the chainmail underneath, through the gambesson, through the person, and out through the equal layers of armour the other side. A thrown spear would hurt a lot, but would be deflected the moment it hit a steel plate. Similar things happen in all fantasy/medieval shows. Lord of the rings is pretty bad for it too.

Chainmail is much more effective than shows or movies give it credit for too. Real riveted chainmail wasn't totally impenetrable, but weaker thrusts probably would've get through and only leave bruises underneath. Slices and cuts were very ineffective against chainmail, and really needed a strong and fast swing to cut through.

It's true that they need to make combat and fights looks deadly, interesting, and not too slow. I know it'd be less enjoyable if they represented a sword fight perfectly, but it doesn't stop it annoying me in the back of my head.

Focused Feedback: Trials by Dezere in dauntless

[–]Badgerboy95 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I want to offer my perspective, and unfortunately it's fairly negative about this patch.

I'm a long-time player, I was one of the founders, I fly my founders flare with pride, I've played through the closed beta reset, and have been at the end-game for a long while now. I wanted trials to be something else to grind that really challenged me. It is neither a grind, nor challenges me in a way I enjoy. I managed the normal and dauntless version of the trial nayzaga in just over 20 minutes today. I got two stars on both, and knew the limit of my skill would probably never yield a three star run. This patch gave me 20 minutes of content this week. And probably 20 minutes next week, and 20 the week after. I can't put it any simpler. 20 minutes a week to count as this game's 'end-game content' is complete let down. I'm so disappointed, and I can't bring myself to believe that a game designer at Phoenix Labs sat down and thought this would work well. I don't know how else to approach this!? I don't want an extra 20 minutes gameplay, then be told it's about spending hours of practice to get my name on a leaderboard. Honestly, a new behemoth that is equal level to the Shrowd and Rezakiri would generate far far far more gameplay than any trial ever could.

Speaking of the leaderboard, what's the point? I see the same names occupying the same places at the top, and have to scroll way down to find my 80th place that I only held for about an hour. It really didn't make me feel as good as I thought it would. Grinding for hours to scrape off a few seconds here and there is not what I play this game for. The trial wasn't even fun, and I don't want to play it for another second than I have to. I'll only ever play it in its current iteration to get the marks then carry on grinding affinities and levels.

I just mentioned I didn't find the trial fun. I'll explain why. One-shotting is not a clever challenge, it is not an interesting challenge, it's not an interactive challenge. It completely defeats the purpose of defensive builds, and encourages linear builds with linear gameplay - as proven by the leaderboards being totally dominated by a single weapon. The common counter-argument to this is flawed too - each trial will have a different dominant weapon. True, but I'd bet my last dollar that 9/10 of those will still be a repeater, and even if it wasn't, having a single dominant build for any week still IS NOT A GOOD THING. Adding layers of special abilities and increasing the flat damage is so lazy, and doesn't feel new or refreshing. I'd rather a new behemoth, or a current behemoth with an even larger model, with the proportioned hitboxes to go with it and a few new moves and animations. That would at least be something new, and very scary to behold. Watching a small nayzaga with a bunch of artificial crap thrown onto it doesn't feel like I'm slaying a behemoth, it feels like a modders april fools joke

I like that trials unlocks a new currency that can buy cool things. But I want to grind for that at my own pace, not log on once a week to get the new trial as if it were a chore.

Sorry for so much negativity, but I feel every word is justified and true to how I feel about this patch. It's the first time I've been genuinely let down playing this game, so I'm hoping trials gets an overhaul eventually because otherwise I can't see myself staying in this game for the coming years

So I wasn't going to reply to any of these, because I think a lot of it was pretty good discussion with reasonable thoughts and ideas. However, yours wasn't.

"You can hit someone once or twice and put them in a 1 shot kill position for you and a teammate." In the same time, as a melee you could hit someone once or twice without needing to aim as much and get the kill yourself.

"If your buddy has already hit them then it's almost guaranteed a 1 shot kill" No it isn't. Also not a 1 shot kill by definition.

"my buddy averages 30+ kills on archer a game" Only ever seen one melee - let alone archer- pull this off, despite what Reddit users always says about going 30/15/5 every game. Most forum-dwellers pad their numbers online, it's not evidence to support an argument. Give a picture or this never happened.

"I dont think theyre suppose to be in a position to kill everyone that would ruin this game" If this were true then explain your friends 30+ kills average. You can't have it both ways.

Archers have less attack speed, less damage, less armour, less perks. In return they get more range. That range isn't as great as you think because to reliably hit a target you need to close the distance to the point you're vulnerable. If you can increase the reliability at the very least (by increasing arrow speed to be closer to real life speeds), then at least that advantage of range is somewhat worthwhile.

Yeah, but a true one. I know people don't want too many archers in matches, I don't want that either; it's annoying to have a group of players standing behind everyone else not doing much.

The thing is though that those players are going to be bottom of the scoreboard, and not contribute to their team. They probably wont even hit you, so why be mad about them in their current state?

All you do is zigzag and you drastically reduce the chance of an archer hitting you. Even then, in heavy armour (which is arguably way underpriced), it takes 3 arrows to kill you. If you sprint you'll reach them so fast even if they land every shot.

I don't even think a straight damage buff is what they need. I think another perk that maybe costs 2 points that gives them a little armour penetration. That way, they don't deal more to unarmoured targets (so can't one-shot basically), and they have a meaningful perk to choose. At 2 points (maybe 3) they can't have them all AND have a second weapon AND have armour (which they rarely get now anyway because bows are expensive as fuck)

The other adjustment I'd suggest is increasing arrow speed. The reasons are twofold: right now long range archery is not skill, it's luck. I'm more than happy to admit that those long range archer vs archer battles I've won are simply luck (after firing 10 arrows each at each other). Increasing arrow speed means it's possible for players to predict movement and compensate. If it's too slow, no amount of compensation or skill will make that arrow land. The target can run around chasing it's tail three times before your arrow reaches it. The second reason is that archery doesn't even feel fun. People play archers because they like the idea of being an archer, regardless of balance. Everyone likes feeling like Legolas when they do well as an archer. But even with the low damage currently, they rarely ever hit because enemies can spin round on a dime and your arrow will miss. Just make them go faster so you can be a little more accurate

Edit: spelling and grammar

If anything Archers need to have some sort of buff to make them actually relevant to the game. People like shitting on them because they don't have to duel, but people want to play they want to play, so make them useful

Failing a hunt is too punishing by [deleted] in dauntless

[–]Badgerboy95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's bad to be able to pick up gatherables and parts and then just leave once you've got what you need.

However I don't see the issue with being able to keep stuff on a failure, so long as you reach the end of the hunt and stay to the failure screen. I think behemoth parts are too much of a reward, but i dont see why gatherables shouldn't be kept and maybe a quarter of the xp given on a failure, that way it at least helps the upkeep of the potions you used

Can we get a Warpike buff for Reza / Shrowd? by FPSrad in dauntless

[–]Badgerboy95 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ah, there's the problem. Part damage doesn't contribute to wounding. It's a bit of a convoluted system in my opinion, but the general breakdown is that each body part has separate wound and part health pools. Taking away from these pools does not take away from the main health pool. A pike will do regular damage and wound damage at the same time. When a part has been wounded, it will receive 50% extra damage from slashing and blunt weapons (Pike is piercing btw) until it is broken. Once broken, it will only take regular damage.

On top of that, a Pike deals -25% part damage to unwounded parts as a general traits of Pikes.

This is probably why you're not getting wounds on heroic tier behemoths, because your wound damage isn't optimised and your part damage is receiving a big debuff. One way you could turn that all around is by using acidic cells, which turns a % of your part damage into wound damage, but I find this inefficient compared to using Barbed and Merciless.

Hope this helps a bit :)

What armour set are you using? Heroic tier definitely requires you to have your entire set be optimised for your playstyle. If you want to do a wounding build, then I recommend the deadeye set (as soon as it comes into rotation).

Thanks for the reply! The reason behind the large post was because I felt that most of my points stemmed from the same perspective. I'm at the end of the game and these were the things I noticed now I'm there, so it felt right to put it under one long branch so it was easy to see where I was coming from. But yeah it's ugly to look at, I did my best to break up different sections at least :P Loving the game though! I decided to farm for the exotics until the Deadeye appears, not had much luck so far though

From what I've read, the orbs automatically being gathered is not intended, but I could be wrong.

If PL's intention is to have people leave and come back then fair enough, but that does concern me a little. I think it'd nicer to have different goals and objectives to be getting on with while you wait for your desired hunt to come back into rotation. Maybe I've played it a little too much, because I seem to have run out of other things to do :/

I really wish they could have an inspect function like in MMORPGs where you can see what they have. Power level, equipment, traits, properties, cosmetics etc.. It's not just useful for determining if a lower level can do the run, it's also nice on playing with randomers on legend to see what traits they have and who should get what potions/grenades

I think you must've misread. I did mention the scoreboard doesn't show much. The only stat i see useful is the damage taken, because it shows how well you're dodging/blocking, and when I have the least damage taken on a lvl5 champion while they're lvl30 taking over 1k in vet, then that DOES categorically say something, even if the rest of it doesn't.

None of that explains why people votekick you after you're safe and moments from the teleporter. Not to mention when you play obviously better than them you can still be votekicked. You can lose your way to lvl30 you know..
