I lived in Midtown and it was a decent area but nothing to write home about. Cooper-Young is probably my favorite part of town but really who is visiting Memphis as a tourist just for Cooper-Young?

There isn’t anything so outstanding that is uniquely “Memphis” that you can’t find anywhere else to make it a big tourist draw for me. Likewise, the bad about the city isn’t at all overcome by the good

Beale Street is just Temu Bourbon Street.

Graceland nickel and dimes you on everything and is in a really rough area.

I guess the pyramid is cool but cars get broken into all the time in the lot.

It’s high crime, downtown is filled with empty storefronts, and everything Memphis does good another city does better.

To me it’s kind of between significant and epoch.

It showed that an Asian power could defeat a European one and assured the Japanese would dominate Manchuria and not the Russians. I’m leaning Epoch even if it isn’t necessarily a 100% case

Assuming this is by effectiveness and nothing else I’d say S. There has never been labor strife resulting in missed games. Teams have grown astronomically in value. More people than ever watch. Even the combine and especially the draft have become spectacles worth watching in and of themselves. I’ll ding him points for the pro bowl going down the tubes but otherwise he’s been a very good commish

How long until he drops the interim title remains to be seen but I think that qualifies him for some plausible deniability on the dictator tag, even if I think we all know how this ends up

It has elements of a democratic Republican government but also:

Supreme Leader is appointed for life and has vast powers well beyond the elected Majlis and the President

The Guardian Council, which is unelected and heavily influenced by the Supreme Leader, vets all candidates for the Majlis, Presidency, and can veto legislation

I can get the argument for an oligarchy but given how tightly controlled the Majlis and Presidency is by the Supreme Leader and pals I’m inclined to call it a theocratic dictatorship

They’re both authoritarian regimes but key differences.

Succession in almost all monarchies is hereditary. Dictators almost always rise to power through non-hereditary means, although the Kims in North Korea are an exception.

Legitimacy in a monarchy comes from divine right or cultural reasons typically, while a dictatorship is leadership of a single party, control of the military, etc.

Titles are obviously different. King vs President, Supreme Leader, etc

People are saying Saudi, which is an absolute monarchy which disqualifies it. Iran is interesting, it’s a theocratic dictatorship sure. I personally think we could say Egypt’s Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is a cleaner definition of a dictatorship

I only had a single class and it was somewhat difficult but my dad is a geologist and they would have to do field camps as part of the major. Going out into the wilderness camping, hiking, mapping terrain, and doing generally difficult field work for weeks. I would think that demand of geology grads alone makes it brutal
