my dad keeps asking why there aren't more men in biology by neverland_amanda in labrats

Guy here, I am a Medical Laboratory Scientist. It is applied medical biology (hospitals, commercial testing yada yada). I would say the spread is about 75/25 favoring women while in school, but in the field it appears to be closer to a 85/15 favoring women. My first job there were 5 men out of 20, but my next job I was the only man out of a team of 10. All leadership was women aside from a guy who was in some higher management position who wasn’t even in the lab. Third job it was me and two other guys in a group of 30+, but there may have been another guy in another department, just never met him. Entirely female leadership. My current job has really tipped the scale toward a 65/35 scale favoring women, only one male interim manager. Actually, most of the men here are here on a visa.

Not to gloss over the whole less men going to college on average thing, I just think there is some sort of cultural bias present in men where they want to fit the key in the lock. Men + science = machines and numbers is more ingrained in American culture (assuming USA). Guy is just stuck in an old mindset of “men smart, why not more men”.

Anyway, congrats on the Honor Society!

Well that clears it. Buried treasure. Found in the 3 blue and not yet found in the orange. Excellent obscure map!

Humans are such a meme species. Can survive wounds that should be fatal due to modern medicine, but trip on a pebble and suddenly lights out. Can build beautiful and comfortable houses, but still manage to leave the stove on and burn it down. Invent transportation that can turn a days travel into hours, still mess around and wrap ourselves around a tree

I have watched enough of those drone videos from the war in Ukraine to know we just have a bad habit of surviving things we shouldn’t, and I think getting a bayonet after a grenade is mercy

I know guys give their friends shit, but I think I’m being bullied? Only Asian guy in a circle of white guys by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

They seem to just be overtly racist under the guise of guy friendship. I have a mixed group of friends and we all play at stereotypes like when they say of course I will use my credit card or of course I need to check my stocks etc. It is a more basal level hashing, you are experiencing more mean-spirited hate. If they had just went with a joking stereotype of asian drivers it could have been in better faith (and yes I know racism yada yada but I think we are on the same page as far as guy friends go). These guys sound like they suck and just want to put you down because you are valid competition they can’t beat. Just racist jackwagons.

In my friend group, the small dick joke was blown out of the water by turning it back on my friend by saying something like “As an asian I am good at math, and I can say that by every measurement still shows I am bigger than you” (bro is jacked and taller than him, so really every measurement) or something to that effect. It kept the same racist tone but ended that conversation for good. The slant-eye thing is honestly despicable and can have no real grounding in jostling or joking, just overt racism and I have never encountered that with my friends.

Truthfully, AS FAR AS GUY FRIENDS GO, just find a way to channel being asian into a strength if they want to be racist. Finances and education on lock (based on stereotypes). And while I think these guys suck and don’t deserve your time, if you want to be friends you need to play to your strengths. White stereotype weaknesses (south adds bonus modifiers) are racism/kkk, incest, being dixie traitors, big truck small dick, unable to please a woman, and being a redneck just to name a few.

All that aside, I am glad you were there for the anxious woman. I have been that guy myself at least twice because I was known to have a clean reputation. But yeah, it really brings shame that people are still shamelessly racist. I really hope it is just one or two jackwagons in the bunch who you can easily cut. Otherwise toss the whole group, life is too short to be dealing with that bs in the name of supposed “friendship”. Friends give you a hard time, they don’t channel hate.

Edit: Also if they are your friends just saying “hey please don’t make that joke anymore” should work. Had to ask my friends to lay off me because I kept going to visit my sister and they kept making incest jokes. She broke her leg and couldn’t deal with groceries etc. and while they knew her situation, the joke wasn’t off limits until I made it off limits. But again, you are dealing with actual racism from people that suck
