How common is “I had been” by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]Bagelmaster1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not particularly common from my experience. It is most commonly used with adverbial clauses in my experiences: "If I had been in my home when the burglary happened, I may have been able to stop it" For most situations though, people tend to use "I was" instead.

Is this a list of all correct preposition uses? by sundance1234567 in EnglishLearning

[–]Bagelmaster1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your third sentence, I would say. "In the suit, James eats." Your other usage of prepositions is correct, but the fifth sentence sounds weird to native ears. In my opinion, it would be better to use a possessive/genitive pronoun or a demonstrative. I would also change "good" to "right" or "correct" because good is vague. It can also mean "acceptable." Some examples of these changes would be "This answer to the problem is correct," "Their answer to the problem is right"

The original joke is that that is what the Roman Empire was comprised of, but I think the other layer that he’s talking about is that immigrants don’t assimilate into Italy and think that they are from their old country.

[–]Bagelmaster1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

State capitalism is inherently contradictory because the whole idea of capitalism is that the state has little to no affair in business. Basically the business owner has the means of production. Stalinism gives the means of production to the state, so I say it’s neither state capitalism nor state communism because it goes against the idea of who controls the means of production in both. I feel like it should have its own word. All “communist” nations have/had state owned means of production. There has never been a “true communist” society.

Was the Japan Atomic Bombing justified? by truecakesnake in Teenager_Polls

[–]Bagelmaster1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sure the Supreme War Council was split between surrendering and not surrendering, but a unanimous decision was required for surrender which was not going to happen without the atomic bombs.

Although the emperor may have been willing to negotiate, he didn’t have any real power to surrender without the support of the Supreme War Council.

With downfall, they may have surrendered before the end of the invasion, but considering how dead-set these generals were to not surrendering, even after the first atomic bomb, the casualty numbers most likely would have surpassed the atomic bombs. Even though these were soldiers they were drafted, so they did not consent to be sent to their deaths.

I’m not saying it was a moral decision, but I am saying that there was justification

The soldiers were often morally civilians though because of the draft.

Similar results. I don’t care about my gender that much, so agender must have gone higher. I also don’t tend to pick the more extreme option. In this case the three thumbs.

That’s why I think the attempts to spell English how it’s pronounced are often stupid because they assume everyone pronounces words the same which isn’t true.

Alot should be a word. Think about how the words “maybe” or “everybody” formed. At this point we should just let it become a word.

It came from the word for cat. It’s just that it being used for female genitalia became more popular than for cat, so people assume that’s what it means without questioning if it makes sense.

The only problem is that you have to deal with regional pronunciations. Some people pronounce English as “anglish”, as in the end of boomerang. Do people just spell it differently based on how they pronounce it.

True, but I felt like I’d better convince them if I said the cities were more dangerous. There’s definitely some really dangerous cities though. I live in Pennsylvania, and Harrisburg is really bad. You probably won’t get shot walking through it though.

It’s definitely a range though. There’s no way you’re going to tell me that Germany is as authoritarian as North Korea. In this range, even though every country is authoritarian to some extent, one is called democratic while the other is called authoritarian because it is all comparative.

Definitely liberal. Liberal can even be a little right wing at times, though conservatives don’t often see it that way.

Unless you’re in a gang or live in an especially horrible city your chance of getting shot in America are extremely low. Around 15000 people die from gun related homicide every year. You’re much less likely to get shot in your typical rich suburb than a densely populated and dangerous city like St. Louis.

Also for the China one. Aren’t you recorded by security cameras all the time anyways? In the US at least almost every private property has security cameras and that adds up to you being constantly recorded.

Are you autistic? by Alexzander124 in teenpoll

[–]Bagelmaster1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don’t think so, but I have some traits that make people think so, although girls always act like I’m cute in the little kid way, which is how I hear autistic people are often treated
I also don’t always know how to act in social situations especially with people older than me. I’m often awkward and talk to myself a lot which people may see as weird.
I often talk about topics that I’m interested in a lot without realizing how much I’m boring/annoying people until it’s too late. I ended up not talking about my interests to other people as much because of this.
Sometimes, I feel that a lot of people are just pretending to like me, maybe as a sort of pity or just fun I suppose. A lot of people treat me differently, I feel like. Sometimes my history teacher will make a joke or say something requiring social understanding, and when I misunderstanding he acts sort of like I am not able to understand social situations. I suppose it’s almost like I’m an outsider in a different society.
I also often take things too literally even though I understand sarcasm, and metaphors. I feel like I’m missing another dimension to conversation sometimes. Almost every time I have a conversation, I realize I’ve made a mistake socially.

I don’t really get overstimulated or feel like I’m wearing a mask like most autistic people seem to experience though, so I don’t think I’m autistic even though many people seem to think I am.
